Mark Andrez* & Den Rize - Flames / Distance - 18-Aug-09 01:56 PM
Second release from Danish Mark Andréz, protégée and fellow countryman of Daniel Kandi, with whom he successfully remixed Evbointh - One Wish on Anjunabeats. Therefore it's not a big surprise that Andréz' sound is influenced by Daniel Kandi, however Mark manages to create his own distinctive sound on this release with Ukrainian newcomer Den Rize.
The head-liner "Flames" premièred on Trance Around The World with Above & Beyond back in January 2009. Back then it didn't have the guitar'ish synth in the breakdown. I would have liked to see that version released, some would even go as far as calling it a bit cheesy, but for me I just don't think it suites the track. An unnecessary add-on, you could say. However, I instantly fell in love with the track. The b-side (or double A-side as they are often called in this digital age) is "Distance". It is progressive trance, but a lot more 'trancy' than nowadays so-called progressive trance. It features an Andy Moor-like vocal chop throughout the track. A pleasant surprise, and with these two tracks you already have a strong release on it's own.
However, Aly & Fila thought otherwise and therefore decided to have three remixers. A big mistake if you ask me. None of the remixes are even close to their respective originals, and to be honest they are were poor to say it mildly. The Ragab and El Sisi remixes are poor imitations of the labels owners, Aly & Fila, while Johan Ekman's remix is just very poorly produced, not to mention it's lack of proper mastering.
This release is a prime example of how remixes can ruin the overall impression of a release. Of course the remixes don't make the originals any worse, but they are so unnecessary that you can't ignore them. Therefore, head straight for the two fine Original's!
