John Cale - I Keep A Close Watch - 03-Dec-07 02:38 PM
The sensitive voice of John Cale fits the fragile lyrics of his own song so well if your love is a little shaken, this will make your nerves sing. Between the elegance of the 75 original and the intensity of the 82/83 return, the merry trumpets of the first and the dramatic sound effects of the latter pared off, heres as great a song as any John Cale has played. Could we have another version, please, with just his voice and the piano?

Red Guitars - Be With Me - 29-Nov-07 04:41 AM
Noone really believed Red Guitars would cope with losing Jeremy Kidd, their core member. And yet, when this single came out, as the first offering of the new band, it was a revelation, not to say revolution. Far from the charming and entertaining, rhythmic industrial pop of before, this was a soul pop classic, a big step sidewards and forwards. Ian Broudies production makes the best out of Robert Holmes sweet moan, delicately dwelling with every little turn of the song.

Sadly, when the album "Tales Of The Expected" followed, the magic was gone. Howard Gray forced an MOR sound on the band, lacking all of Broudies inspiration. Listening to "Be With Me" in its album version was a cruel disappointment and an example of what makes (and doesnt make) a great song.
