DJ Mau Mau - 11-May-05 11:10 AM
I remember that, at the historical 'Nova Dance' Radio Station, Mau Mau replaced (or was invited by) Renato Lopes sometimes. One day, he played an astonishing hardcore techno repertory, that included the breakbeat sensation 'Ace The Space - Your Special Attraction' (which is in the other side of '9 Is A Classic' twelve inch), and things like that. Many of the hits played in Sra. Krawitz club by the residents Mau Mau & Renato Lopes were part of the repertories of 'Nova Dance', from Future Sound Of London's 'Metropolis - Metropolis', to 'Resistance D - Morning Sunrise', 'Cybordelics - Nighthorse', 'Jam & Spoon - Stella', among others.
Camilo Rocha - 25-Apr-05 09:23 AM
Since my generation was so deeply influenced by the ‘Nova Dance’ Station (broadcasted on Nova FM about 1993), it’s a question of justice to make this statement in favor of Camilo Rocha, a brilliant journalist that used to be on its command with Renato Lopes. Camilo was the one that commented all the new tracks played in there, and believe me – he knew how to do it. The first time I saw his articles on a magazine was many years ago, at the times of Bizz, a Rock/Pop driven one, and he was the only journalist to talk about electronic music in it. Congratulations to him!
Renato Lopes - 25-Apr-05 05:29 AM
I just couldn’t miss the chance to say “Thanks a lot” to Master Renato Lopes for all he did to the brazilian scene all these years. I remember that, about twelve years ago, in 1993, we had three major radio stations for underground electronic music on the FMs of São Paulo: ‘Novas Tendências’, whose author was José Roberto Mahr; the one of Sound Factory (a huge electronic club of the east side of São Paulo) and ‘Nova Dance’, (made by DJ Renato Lopes and the journalist Camilo Rocha), all groundbreaking ones. The ‘Nova Dance’ set trends and brought us the miscellanea of the international electronic music culture of that time – at the period that Renato Lopes was considered the best DJ by Noite Ilustrada of Folha de São Paulo (he won the titles of 1992, 1993 and 1994). There are so many things to remember from ‘Nova Dance’… Broadcasted every Friday from 22h to 23h, it meant much more than just a radio station, it was a kind of electronic university, joining the cultural aspect of music with the unending pleasure to listen to all that vanguard sounds, from House to Techno, Trance, Ambient, Electro, Hardcore, among other. It surely opened the minds of several young people, at a time when the access to any information about the international scene was seriously restricted to those that could afford foreign magazines. The musical experiences available to all listeners of ‘Nova Dance’ were priceless: I remember one of those editions, specially dedicated to ambient music, hearing tracks such as Dave Angel – Patrice (of Family EP), Biosphere’s “Baby Interphase” and even the timeless Rhythim Is Rhythim – Kao-Tic Harmony! Renato Lopes and Camilo Rocha were the avant-garde in person! It was on this Radio Station presented by Renato that I could, for the first time, hear tracks such as the massive hits “Plastic Dreams” (Jaydee) and “Show Me Love” (Robin S), much before they were regularly played on clubs.
