Jon Hopkins - Insides - 11-May-09 06:00 AM
I feel saddened by the fact that I can only give this 3 out of 5. After the first two excellent albums and a string of brilliant remixes for other artists including the creeping crawling rumbling monster that was the remix of Leo Abrahams Spider, listening to this left me feeling deflated and somewhat cheated. The previous albums were clearly inspired by the likes of Eno, David Morley, Autechre and a host of other ambient/techno producers from the early to late nineties downtempo electronica scene

I was hoping for more of the same this time around and was even prepared to accept a subtle nod to the current trend of analog synth bashing retro electro crap that seems to have infected all other forms of dance music. Instead what we have is some sort of bastard child of Dubstep and IDM with a few ambient melodies and sensibilities thrown in for good measure. There are a few strong tracks on the album where Jon appears to go back to what he does best - lush melodies and subtle but intricate beats - but for the most it just seems to be an exercise in trying to out-program squarepusher/Aphex twin on the drums whist tryng to maintain sense of melody to keep people interested. Whist these skills are to be admired they do not reflect what Jon does best in my opinion and to be honest were done better by the aforementioned artists 10 to 15 years ago.

Overall Id rate this album as disappointing but with a few tracks of real quality to comand an overall purchase.

Gotta have house.............
Gotta have house.............

An instant classic. As soon as I placed the needle on the breakdown whilst listening to it in the record shop I knew it was gonna be a classic!

This was confirmed the very next day when I went to a UK rave called Uprising in Sheffield. One of the resident DJs dropped it and the place went wild.

Again its a tune with a simplistic hook, a siren type sound which captivates your mind, grabs hold of your scrotum and shakes your inner workings with such vigour that youll never forget it.
Couple that hook with some classic 303 programming and you have an instant classic on your hands!!

Im surprised its not been resurrected and remixed by some present day DJ/producer.

Thank god it hasnt!

Jam & Spoon - Right In The Night (Fall In Love With Music) - 21-Mar-07 08:51 PM
Another Dizstruxshon classic!

The first part of the tune Follow me was pretty much overlooked because it was too slow to mix in with the tunes that were being played at the raves I was attending at that time. the second half of the tune however is a different kettle of fish!

To me it was the sound of 10000 bees on MDMA stuck in a biscuit tin the way that the tune picks up pace and the euphoric sound just keep building and building. this style of pitch changing tune has been repeated but none compare to this trance masterpiece.

Curare - Schneller Pfeil - 21-Mar-07 08:51 PM
Oooo its too fast.....I can still hear the Harthouse purist snobs moaning to this day. Their loss is the hardtrance fans gain. This has all the classic elements of Hildenbeutel in his heyday, but doing something slightly different for a change. This was hammered by DJ Noya at Dizstruxshion, and rightly so, its a pacy uplifting trancer which went down an absolute storm.

Yall wanna play house some more..........say yeah!

This tune has more energy than Kris Akabusi with his nuts wired to the national grid. This track was hammered by M-Zone back in 1995 and 1996. It has also seen a bit of a renaissance in his oldskool sets recently.

It written and produced by M.I.K.E. and is a lot less subtle than his trancy masterpieces that were to appear on Bonzai under his Push pseudonym later in the 90s.
