Autechre - Amber - 31-Aug-05 07:57 AM
Many songs are minimalistic with calm dreamlike rhythms. But you will also find wonderful melodies, the best Ae have created so far(Track 3, 7, 10). Other tracks will haunt you(Track 5, 6, 11). I always listen to subtle "Amber" before I sleep. A great ambient record.
Aphex Twin, The* - Classics - 31-Aug-05 07:57 AM
When I think of techno, I think of cheap cliches. Beats from the assembly line, pseudo-transcendental melodies, mainstream trash. Of course, not all techno works are bad and if I had to recommend one, I would recommend these early works from Richard D James. You will not find his chaotic and non-repetetive beats here, but nevertheless they are complex and intelligent. The melodies are sometimes disturbing like a horror film soundtrack, sometimes simply beautiful. And dont miss the powerful "We have arrived", this track should be labeled as "Industrial Dance Music".
Autechre - LP5 - 31-Aug-05 03:50 AM
With "LP5" Autechre started to experiment, but they werent very good at it back then. Ive got the same problem with their "ep7". Ok, there are some nice and interesting songs, but the rest is powerless. Most of the songs on these two albums fail to create the intensively mind-altering atmosphere of their later works(exceptions e.g.: "caliper remote" on "LP5" or the hidden track on "ep7").
Fazit: Their two weakest records. But they were both very neccessary, because Ae was still practicing and training for "confield", "draft 7.30" and "untilted" at that time, hehe.
Einstürzende Neubauten - Kollaps - 31-Aug-05 12:58 AM
Never have Neubautens lyrics reached the same high level as on their first record "Kollaps". They could have been also released as poems without music. Expressively they speak of the anger, fatalism and loneliness people feel in their urban Lebensräumen. On the second record, "Zeichnungen des Patienten...", the lyrics already start to sound meaningless and uninsprired.
Skinny Puppy - 30-Aug-05 04:00 AM
Have you ever listened to industrial and suddenly felt the urge to safe wildlife, to help baby seaturtles out of their eggs? Then youre the right person for Skinny Puppy!
A Southafrican music magazine once voted them on place 29 of the 50 worst bands ever: "And so it came to pass in the 1980s that two Canadians Kevins changed their names to cEvin and Nivek to make themselves more interesting (...) The sound of whiny students on drugs sampling Timothy Lary(...)"
No, that is too mean. I actually like some of their works.
