Onur Özer - Red Cabaret EP - 04-Mar-07 01:34 AM
WOW...this guy just doesn't stop producing quality tune after quality tune. Onur's ability to systematically and mathematically design music is rarely surpassed and while I thought it couldn't get any better than his last few releases I am happily mistaken and he gives us this MASTERPIECE of minimal house...

While the tune that makes dancefloors go absolutely bonkers is Allegro Energico (and deservedly so, for I have never heard minimal house quite like this....with this much energy and creating an absolute statement as to the health of where minimal could be headed), the tune that should be getting all the attention is Orion.

I remember when Audion first started allowing his song Mouth To Mouth to get some airplay....of course no one knew what it was when they heard it, so it got a nickname as the "bee swarming tune." Well, no offence to Matthew Dear (aka Audion), but Onur's Orion is the REAL bee swarming tune...god....the sounds Onur uses here are diverse, and have so much heart in them you can almost feel the love that got put into these tracks....hell, I feel the love...

I know 2007 is early in its infancy...but I believe this is going to be the EP of the year.... it has so much going on for it it has no excuse not to. Indeed....it's a little something for everyone, or if you are like me, you find a way to fit every tune on this release in your sets... they DESERVE to be played...and Onur is finally getting the exposure that he so rightly deserves.....

Len Faki* - Rainbow Delta / Mekong Delta - 13-Feb-07 01:38 AM
I don't know how any true lover of dance music could give this release anything less than a "4". I mean, have you seen the reaction either tune creates on a dancefloor? Pure sickness, is the only word for what the release can create.

"Mekong Delta" is the stronger offering of the two, creating this menacing feeling that will no doubt permeate the air. It's hard, has groove, and will do some serious bizness on any floor. This one gets dropped more in my sets than most tunes as of late.

"Rainbow Delta" is a standard house tune, but it has more going on than meets the eye. It sounds simple, but it truly is not... a lot of work and heart and soul went into this tune, and you can tell. It's fairly reminiscent of older house releases...and that's a good thing. It's atmospheric house the way it is meant to be heard...

Overall, one of the sickest, most advanced thinking releases of early 2007. This one will stay in my box for a long time...

Stephan Bodzin vs. Marc Romboy* - Telesto / Hydra - 17-Jan-07 02:49 AM
Marc Romboy doin' it again with this release. There is no one better in the game creating chunky dirty beats with techy elements than Marc... this release is more of the same, but eclipses his previous work in my opinion, if only because of Hydra. This is a track that manages to be minimal, techy, trancy, melodic (yet not), and no doubt a TRUE weapon for the dancefloor. Highly recommended piece of work here, just like all of Marc's other work..... oh, I almost forgot, Stephen Bodzin worked on this too...but make no mistake, this is all Romboy....

Minilogue - Elephant's Parade - 16-Jan-07 06:43 AM
I was about to write my first negative review of Minilogue, until I got to the flip-side of this release. Birdsong is what saves this entire musical trip, if only because Elephant's Parade is totally uninspiring, and really goes...well....nowhere. Very much unlike a true parade... it makes me scratch my head and want to ask these boys what they were thinking.

However, Birdsong redeems the whole vinyl. This is more Minilogue mastery, with sick sounds and grooves. Personally, I love the jazz influences in this song, and over the last 5 or so releases by these guys, I have discovered just how eclectic their taste in music truly is.

This is not typical "club" music, but some of the deeper and more forward thinking clubs would eat this stuff up... once again, Minilogue makes us envious that we are not them... if only the whole release could live up to their prior standards....

Villalobos* - Fizheuer Zieheuer - 09-Jan-07 12:29 PM
Most people have gotten it wrong about this piece of music. Perhaps they don't understand what Ricardo is trying to do, but I get it...and I am a changed man after possessing it.

This is not a typical release to be placed on the market, and it doesn't have broad appeal across the board. The reason for this is simple. While many a good DJ can cut this track up and play the parts they need to accent any set, I don't believe that was its main purpose.

I look at this amazing journey (cause that is what is....a journey through music) and I am fiercely reminded of what composers of classical music have done for centuries. To me, this is a composers body of work, and one must approach it that way. Sure it doesn't have all the elements of a traditional classical piece, but it has movements, and just like Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach, it changes and morphs through all the different movements. Perhaps Ricardo could be considered the first true electronic composers and this would be his first electric symphony. Hopefully more are to come, because music does not always have to have commercial appeal. This is an unbelievable example of what a great musical mind can come up with in this medium.

This is one of the most groundbreaking releases ever in the history of dance music. No one has ever tried anything like this, nor will anyone eclipse it in the near future.
