Wagon Christ - Phat Lab. Nightmare - 30-Apr-08 08:19 PM
In a recent interview with Future Music, Luke told the interviewer that this is the only CD he has EVER made that he had a clear cut idea of what it would sound like before he made it. He states that Rising High wasn't looking for any "Techno records", but rather ambient records. So he knew what he had to do. Sit down and make an ambient record... which is very different than how he usually works. Normally he will construct anywhere from 5 - 20 tracks at once and then when finished he'll group them accordingly... some go to Kerrier District if they sound like Disco while other that are more Hip Hop based go to his Wagon Christ moniker. Simple as that. But with Luke's first album he had a plan in mind and it was all out ambient. And you can tell because this is for better or worse the most concise album he will probably ever make.

All songs start very slow and gradually gain some speed(they’re also very long). Hi hats and snares are very involved in this ambient outing, with normal synth progressions underneath. An overall very tinny sound with some crunchy percussion. This has lots of subtle changes going on but for the most part very repetitive. It doesn't have a sound that makes you think "Vibert", in fact, anything but him. I wouldn't go out of my way to hear these tracks, but if you’re a collector it's a must have.

Ceephax* - Megalift E.P. - 15-Apr-08 06:54 AM
This is some of the best material of 07 in my eyes. Ceephax has taken a really strong turn away from his more straight forward Acid sound. This EP is full of very fast drum breaks, but on top of that he throws down really fast and tiny Acid lines and alot of distorted beats. But most importantly, this outing shows his maturity in that the synth lines he chooses are some of the most beautiful and emotive sounds to come from Andy maybe ever. Side B is classic IDM, while side A's Stir Fry Jungle is more breakcore based with a little if no melody(very rare for Ceepahx), and Friend Track is a Acid stormer but one with very subtle changes in it's programming, nothing to dramatic.

Side B's tunes are the best he has to offer, And here he shows of his work with synths and it's amazing. Time Tunnel is just plain epic and Castilian is the best combination of Chiptune and breaks I’ve EVER heard. These tracks are very nostalgic for me.

I am hoping his new Planet Mu album will be more of this and not as much straight forward Acid Techno.

Tuss, The - Rushup Edge - 22-Jul-07 10:37 AM
I think this release is over rated, not because of the music, but because of the hype that has been built up around it. If this truly is AFX then I am disappointed. It is pretty decent, but not what I expected from a new RDJ release. It's been done, and been done better, Ceephax amongst others. The track Death Fuck really makes me mad though, How much glitchy fuckery can we really get? didn't we have enough with Drukqs? I'm killing for those old classic RDJ melodies he made from his array of synths. The Analord series wet my whistle but it wasn't enough. Don't get me completely wrong, some tracks are good.

The standout to me is Rushup I Bank 12. This is a beautiful track, maybe as good as any RDJ track in the last 7 or 8 years. It combines the digital sound he perfected in Drukqs and the RDJ album with the core melodies of the Analord releases. A real Winner. The first two(Synthacon 9,Rushup 10 ) are decent/good. The last one is chill, pretty patented Analord stuff. The only curio on here may be Shiz Ko E. The main synth line is absolutely gorgeous. I love it. It makes me think of old 70's cop shows. Unfortunately, it's very short.

In the end when I Reassess the album and all of it's good points I have to remind myself, it's all been done. I keep telling myself, I could of swore I already heard this or that somewhere else, and it's because I have! Buy it if you’re an RDJ fan but if not, just stick to Ceephax or Luke Vibert. It will give you some good tunes for the rotation, but it won't last longer than a week or so.

I must confess something... this album is terrible. It really pains me to say it too. I was hot on the trail of IDM artists like AFX and Squarepusher and I had so much faith in this release. But when I listened to this I could have swore it was made in the 80's! it sounds so dated it’s unbearable. When I listen to Aphex's SAW I think it's amazing, and although the repetition is there, the rhythm is undeniable. But this album is joke. I can practically hear the samples loop over and over again and guess when each is gonna stop and start. So unoriginal. And to think this guy is great friends with RDJ and passes off tracks and material with him all the time.

When I first listened to this album it was alright and allowed me enough strength to go out and buy Lunatic harness, but soon enough this album just disappeared from my back catalog and it never even plays anymore or ever again. When I listen to Lunatic harness it's hard to believe it's the same man. I feel so strongly against this album because Lunatic Harness is what I believe an essential IDM album up there with Hard Normal Daddy, Amber, and the Richard D. James Album. I just don't understand why and how this is so bad, but it is. Stay Away!

The track Honey is a wicked simple techno track, which some how happens to be one of the most emotional tracks I've ever heard. I don't know why, it just strikes a chord with me. It's not very original sounding or anything, just cliche techno. And yet I love it! Im gonna put it in a movie one day, and it will become a classic techno track, if only for it's simplicity. The rest of the album is good to, but wow is Honey grand. And im sure i've heard that synth line somewhere before, but it's just so good. WOW. like i said, not very original, like something from melodies from mars. get it for that track alone.
