Runaways UK* - Finders Kreepers
Oct 31, 2009
This tune is one of my favorite hidden gems. It brings to mind 'Peter and the Wolf'- you can hear the wolf sneaking upon its prey through the woods and over the night snow. It has a laid-back beat with a hard edge and the tune has a unique tone; it is quite simply a refreshingly interesting tune that takes one by surprise upon first hearing. The version found on the Viva Diablo Blanco compliation (without the scratching) is preferable.
This record has become the most used tool in my box. Long ago I decided to sort my records by BPM rather than by genre or label (roughly 2500 at last count).
I've been using it so long I can nail down the BPM of a tune in moments; after a while you get a feel for it- now I can usually pick out the BPM by ear and just use the record to confirm. A little sticker in the top corner of the poly sleeve and into the racks it goes. This tends to sort tunes of a similar time and speed together, yet places a wide variety of tunes together that I might not otherwise think to mix. I don't have to worry about tunes finding their exact spot, and by placing recently placed tunes at the front of the BPM range I can instantly see what I've been overplaying and what I've been neglecting as the lesser played tunes work their way to the back of the box. As a bonus, after time I've memorized most BPMs just by where they fall in the collection. Given any tune I have, I can rattle of dozens of tunes with the same BPM. There are some bonus useful, unskippable scratch tones and sounds as well. This record gets more play than any other in my collection.

'Sunshine Through December'- This tune is utter beauty and class throughout. It grabs you by the heart and drags you through the streets claiming victory. The piano and vocals here are simply made for each other; this is one of the finest hardcore tunes ever made. It makes me want to fuck an art student on a cliff at the beach at sunset on a windy day with someone filming it in black and white...
An Insecure Maniac - Lay Your Love

I think this record would have a much more favorable rating if more people turned it over before dropping it on the decks. Highly underrated, 'The American Inquest (Kicking Mix') is a relentless, powerful gem of a tune on the flipside of an unremarkable Abba remix. It can be found very cheap, would suit the tastes of most here with it's dark and wicked acid line, and as a bonus the older Malcolm X sample is coincidentally very topical to (currently miserable) American foreign policy. | ||||
