Merzbow - Turmeric (Artist Edition) - 16-Jun-06 02:39 AM
Turmeric is more flat-out harsh than his other recent stuff, and contains a lot more organic and "concrete" sounds, it's almost like a return to old at times. To me, it comes across as late 80s or early 90s Merzbow with some low digital bass thrown in, and lots of variety, not a bad thing at all. It's not my favorite of his recent stuff, but it's definitely worth checking out if you can.

Oh, and also, you can glimpse Thurston Moore wearing the Turmeric shirt from this package on the inner tray pic of Sonic Youth's "Rather Ripped", neato.

Merzbow - Paradise Pachinko - 07-Mar-05 07:03 PM
I enjoy this release quite a bit, it's a bit more soothing than typical Merzbow. There are less high-pitch squeals and more low noisy textures, it's easier on the ears while still maintaining it's wall of noise. While it was only a CDr and limited to 70 copies, the label's official site offers the whole cd for download for free, so it's readily available if you have a good internet connection. Just follow the label's links on discogs to find it's mp3 site, there's lots of other deleted releases on there too. I've never seen it for sale anywhere, and as far as I can tell it's one of his most limited releases, so I'm glad the label decided to make it available in mp3 format.

Various - Noise Kills Punk Dead - 13-Feb-05 04:28 AM
If you manage to see this somewhere, pick it up. It contains Noise, Punk (it actually does), and a plethora of things inbetween, you're guaranteed to become amused sooner or later. If you don't end up acutally enjoying it, you'll at least find it interesting enough to remember. What makes it so varied is that it is a result of a request by the label, submit a track that's around a minute long, and it WILL be on the disc, all submissions were used, up until the disc was full. So, yea, there's a few clunkers, but there's also quite a few interesting tracks that make up for it, and the novelty value also makes it worth having.

AFX* - Analogue Bubblebath 5 - 14-Nov-03 02:40 AM
I can understand why this record was never really released, in comparison to Richard's other work, it is average, with just a few standout tracks. Those standouts for me are A1, a 9 minute opener that could have easily been a favorite of many fans had it been properly released. B2, A slightly darker, more wobbly track, that gives off a certain atmosphere that I can't really describe, not neccisarily because it is heavenly, just odd and nice. And B4, a heavy and skittering beat underlined by a nice flowing string loop, another RDJ favorite of mine. As for the other tracks, they are similar to the one's I've elaborated on, just not as engaging to me. Overall, it feels like a calmer, simpler version of Richard D. James Album, with hints of Melodies From Mars, which is another unreleased album.

AFX* - Smojphace EP - 02-Sep-03 12:03 AM
The first track on this CD is the only real "music" track. In comparison to the previous AFX EP (2 Remixes By..), "Run The Place Red (AFX Mix)" is not as good as Track 1 from 2 Remixes, but better than Track 2 from said EP. It Falls short of being as good as 2 Remixes Track 1 due to the Reggae vocals, though they worked well with the beats, I didn't particularly enjoy them. On the subject of KTPA 1 & 2, they were the real reason I bought the CD. I think they are pretty interesting pieces of noise. I don't know if RDJ took the time to craft them or just transfered raw data to audio. My guess is he transfered raw data to audio then crafted it, because rarely when you transfer data to audio does it turn out as varied as these tracks are. Anyway, to the person looking to get into AFX, this is the last place to start, to the completist, it's worth it to complete your collection, and listen to the noise pieces all the way through before dismissing them. They're harder to listen to than contemporary Autechre (which I also like), but interesting nonetheless.
