Mulu - Smiles Like A Shark
Mar 20, 2011
Truly one of the most under-rated of the "Jack & Jill" trip hop duos ever - Mulu's ONLY album "Smells Like A Shark" was overlooked and under-promoted.A vibrant, playful and poignant album filled with stunning and powerful vocals from Laura Campbell and some seriously well produced and constructed beats, whims, rhythms and melodies from Alan Edmunds. It's not completely original but it is graceful and holds up as one of the best trip hop albums that not many have heard or even heard of. Hopefully, exposure here will have people seeking out this sweet gem.
Cure* - Wish
Jul 05, 2010
OK, so it's tough to "out do" an album like "Disintegration". It was the pinnacle of The Cure for all fans alike. So when "Wish" came out I was surprised to hear how great a follow-up this turned out. It's full of both soft, melancholic melodies/lyrics and some seriously hard rockin' jams. "Open" just does that - it opens a new chapter in The Cure legacy and it makes no excuses with it's vibrant rip roarin' riffs and drumming. The album's "End" just does the same at ends it with the same ferocious energy. In between we have some super sweet gems like the irresistibly sweet tunes like "Friday I'm In Love" and "High" which were the catchy tracks for single releases of the album and "Letters To Elise". Just from the start you can hear that a lot of great production and effort was involved. Then we have the melancholic tracks like "Apart", "Trust" and "From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea" which are trademark Robert Smith. A touch sappy but poignant and lush none the less. It's a great album and, unfortunately as of 2010, the last great album from The Cure. Maybe something better will top it soon... Maybe...
All good things to those who wait. How very true. After waiting 11 years (!) since his classic "Anthology" release, Mr. Bowring has created another classic piece of electronic magic. It's less low-key than "Anthology" but there are still elements of the ethereal melodies. To simplify it the tone of this album, you can say that it's more "commercial" than his previous work using the Pentatonik alias. But you didn't hear that from me... ;-) KIrsty Hawkshaw lends her voice to two tracks wonderfully, adding her sweet vibes to the fold. It's a terrific album. Go get it now! Really. Go. I'm serious. Why are you still reading this?
Another gem in the ambient crown of electronica. This could've been redundant or borish considering it was a double disc but Simeon's creativity shines through from alpha to omega. It's a vibrant, lush collection of ambient tracks that softly nestle themselves in your mind. It's hard to describe at times but these tracks float and flow like very few ambient albums do. Very few musicians acheive such affection in their music. This is the perfect example of electronica done with the greatest care and talent. It just might be the music you hear in heaven (unless youre athiest) or on the way there. Ambient perfection.
Bringing a new spectrum of music from the onslaught of bands of the post-punk era, the Chameleons brought a mature, dreamlike sound to light. Frontman Mark Burgess & company created thrilling ethereal music from elements of old-school psychedelia and avant-garde 70's music. Shrill and melodic guitarwork from Reg Smithies and Dave Fielding complimented Burgess' trancey basslines and voice with John Lever's thundering drums. Four solid albums and several compilations of great stuff keep the Chameleons going strong from one century to the next. So glad they got back together!

Combining sprawling vocals and sophisticated production all delivered with sweet & sour lyrics, their one and -unfortunately- only release "Smells Like A Shark" was a gem of an album filled with whimsy and depth.
I'm not sure the reason why then didn't produce a sophomore release, but I for one, would've happily welcomed it.
