Metallica - Death Magnetic - 24-Sep-08 03:08 AM
This is a fairly average release plagued by poor recording quality; a fair portion of the album clips/distorts, especially the percussion. However, those disappointed with St. Anger will be happy to hear that this album sounds (stylistically) a lot more like Metallicas ...And Justice For All / "Black Album" material (no "banging on metal pots" drums, for one).
I was disappointed to see that the silver "Metallica / Death Magnetic" labeling that appears to be printed on the front flap is actually just a sticker on the shrink wrap. The paper case has a coffin-shaped hole that continues all the way through the booklet (the booklet was printed around the holes so the content is still readable, though awkward).
I got this album as part of buying concert tickets, but I expect the major allure of that venture is being able to download a recording of the concert you attend. Overall, I would recommend looking for this at your local library or borrowing it from a friend before deciding to purchase the album.
Various - Advanced Electronics Vol. 3 - 23-Jan-07 11:18 PM
Overall, Ive found this to be the best of the three Advanced Electronics albums released at the time. I have found these compilations to be relatively hit-and-miss, and unfortunately, this continues to be the case with this release.
However, of all of them, I must commend it on having the greatest number of tracks I find enjoyable. I had heard "Freefall (The Hacker Remix)" in a set by DJ Magal, and recognized it right away. Not a terribly busy song, but still good. 2raumwohnung is back in this release with "Spiel Mit", another good pick after the previous albums "Ich und Elaine". Both "Maschinen (Dis:Connected Remix)" and "Kommanda" I have listened to several times in a row, and I cant seem to get sick of hearing them. Theyre catchy, and quite good. Finally, I like the track "Star By Star (Apoptygma Berzerk Remix)", as again it is very catchy and sounds well done.
Perhaps I have not listened to the other tracks as much as I should, but Id have to say that nothing else really stands out to me in this release. I think it would be better to find out what songs you like on the album, then purchase and download them rather than buy the whole thing. Capital try, though; better than the first two.
VNV Nation - Praise The Fallen - 27-Aug-05 01:58 AM
Praise the Fallen is a well-produced album that continues VNV Nations sound from their first release, Advance and Follow. It begins with the track "Chosen", which through dialogue creates a portrait of a world torn by war, the theme of all the songs on the album. "Joy" must have been used as the track name for the sake of irony, as this song is anything but cheerful. Changing the sound of the whole album is the orchestral melody of "PTF2012", which sounds uplifting after the heavy beat of Solitary. Next is "Schweigeminute", German for "Minute of Silence", which is just that: a full 60 seconds of silence. Finishing the album is an unlisted and unnamed 12th track with an airy synth melody, significantly lightening the mood. Overall, this album combines heavy mechanical, dark ambient, and orchestral sounds to create a brilliant work that fully embellishes the original feel of the EBM genre. Highly recommended.
