Prince And The Wizard, The - Untitled - 29-May-08 03:49 AM
Absolutely essential EP from two genuine house masters, Todd Terry and Larry Heard.
Some of the tracks are fairly hit and miss but a lot are certainly more than worthy of your time. The Music is Kickin employs a loop of washing Machine by Heard over a tough 909, proper jacking style music.
The track on the EP that was massive around my area back in the day was 'The Wiz is a genius'. A break beat track with just a mad, bleep style noise transposing all the way through.
The other standout track is Mr. Terry Meets Mr. Fingers, a chunky rhythm track (most likely programmed by Terry) with some beautifully melancholy strings most likley played by Heard.
A fantastic collaboration combining the obvious skills of two house masters.
Steve Poindexter - Work That Mutha F***** - 27-May-08 06:47 AM
This European release is the one I got hold of back in the day. Its the same tracks as the Warehouse release so that was good enough for me.
Anyway, it was all about Computer madness for me. You'd not heard anything like that really at that time. Totally out there driving techno with the sounds mutating and breaking down like you'd imagine a computer would as it had a serious mental breakdown. You got the bonus of born to freak on the EP as well, a serious acid track. Chillin' with P was also a decent addition.
Never got on with Work that Mutha**** really, good track to use in the mix though.
Hijack (2) - Hold No Hostage / Doomsday Of Rap - 27-May-08 04:08 AM
Hard, hard UK rap 12.
At a time (when is this not the case) when British rap was not hitting the same level as their US counterparts. These guys came along and hit so hard. Sitting on album covers with gas masks on and ninja swords way before Wu Tang clan, delivering hard, fast, funky rap, Komanchi Sly cutting through the beats with impecable delivery. Undercover, transforming and cutting up noise over the sledgehammer breaks
And it was from the UK, made you feel proud that we could do this rap thing as good the US.
Landscape - From The Tea-Rooms Of Mars .... To The Hell-Holes Of Uranus - 27-May-08 03:59 AM
Obviously music is a very subjective medium so someones trash might be someone elses gold.
In my case, at a young age my cousin played me this album and I'd never heard anything like it. It got my into electronic music which led to electro, rap, techno into electronic music as we know it today. But for me, this was the start of listening and looking for sounds that no one else had heard before and this album is a showcase for creating fantastic sounds with synthesizers.
I've listened to the album quite recently to see whether it was just those rose tinted specs I had on but some of the synth lines, sounds and solos on the album still sound fantastic.
Yeah, its a bit 'odd' and they seem to fancy themselves as a bit like the band on Star Wars with the Beguine, etc but to me they carry it off because of the innovative sounds and great melodies that they conjur from their equipment.
DJ Shadow - What Does Your Soul Look Like - 27-May-08 03:50 AM
When I heard this EP, it turned a lot of things around for me musically. I'd always loved rap/hip hop alongside a love for many other genres and the melting pot mentality that Shadow employs for his early tracks encompassed so many elements that I love about music.
The sheer emotion that he manged to get into these 4 tracks using only borrowed music is one of immense skill, ear and patience. Everything sits together perfectly and the sax solo in the breakdown is a very special musical moment.
Definitely one of my desert island discs.
