Fat Boys - Sex Machine / Beat Box Is Rocking - 13-Oct-09 07:34 PM
Sex Machine was the first of the crossover successes that the Fat Boys recorded, which was possibly a blessing and a curse to the group, how that gets apportioned between blessing and curse is debatable, but this review isn't terribly concerned with Sex Machine, it's a decent track, funny and well produced, it has it's moments but for me the standout track on this 12" has got to be the second track on the B-Side.
Beat Box Is Rocking is a monster mid to uptempo drum and beatbox track (around 118 beats per minute says my brain bpm counter), in its era I can't really think of a heavier, more energy driven beatboxing record than this. The drums pound in syncopation with Buffy's beatboxing, reaching two crescendos in one three and a half minute track. The first being slightly madcap with the rest of the Fat Boys laying down a verse to the background of party sounds that sound like the party is getting a little out of hand (in a good way I might add), then onto the second which confirms with an excellent vocodored voice that the "Beat Box is Rocking". It certainly was on this track, short but sweet but very intense, it's in my opinion Buffy's, and one of the Fat Boys' greatest moments.
MC ADE - Bass Rock Express - 21-Jun-08 11:02 PM
This is a solid record with one problem, the banjo hook used every once in a while is just plain rubbish! Two copies are a must for a DJ to get around this if playing vinyl, or a quick snip or two in CoolEdit for a Serato DJ, however which way you do it, it's worth the effort, big 808 beats and a cool synth make for a decent mid 80s Miami version excursion of the classic Kraftwerk cut.
Skanna - Heaven E.P - 08-Sep-06 10:29 AM
'This Way' showed Bukem how to progress and he never quite hit the heights of this jazz soaked jungle/dnb work out, perfect in nearly every way, musical and melodic hardcore that lives up to the term 'intelligent'. Flip it over and you have 'Heaven' which is as about a 180 degree turn as flipping the vinyl itself, soft synth, bongo and staggered rolling snares give way to the ferocious break popularised by Nebula II's Atheama and some serious filtered mentasms for a ride through the outer reaches and back again. The third track is unfortunately rather disappointing next to its groove mates but still would class as an A-side for many other producers of that era. Skanna was a seriously classy act and very under-recognised, if you see anything by him out and about, don't hesitate!
Divine Sounds - Me & My Posse - 30-May-06 10:45 PM
Me & My Posse is a late 86 NY monster beat rap record, very stripped down and ruff with stomping kick and snare. Do Or Die In Bedsty, it's important to note, is not the same version as can be found on the Changes We Go Through release, which is a cut up classic required in any self respecting Scratch/mix DJ's arsenal, it is in fact Do Or Die pt 2. It doesn't have that funky beat and scratch sound that made the original so def, but it's still a good rap record all the same.
Marley Marl / Faze One - The Man Marley Marl / Stronger Than Strong (Remix) - 01-Apr-06 05:41 PM
Stronger Than Strong is Wacker Than Wack, but The Man Marley Marl is a lost Marley Marl gem that everyone should have in their collection, a great cut up record that has it's best pressing on this 7", which is a massive shame as it should have been released on 12", what we're they thinking? It is also available on the Tuff City - Smokin' Beats comp but the pressing is quite inferior, although it does have some extended bonus beats, which are cool.
