Shamen, The - S.O.S. EP (Part 1) - 12-Oct-09 08:50 AM
What's that Lassie trouble down the mine, an sos signal, miners trapped with only old Shamen hits for company.
Seems the mixes varied according to what format you bought it on, with rubbish Beatmasters mixes appearing on nearly every format, this doesn't look good. Oh but they have the excellent Possible Worlds on there as well, so it looks like we shouldn't give up hope just yet. That includes the awesome live version as well as the mighty Coming Unstrung too.
Good boy, now let's go help those stricken miners.

Another favourite of mine, purchased on tape. A lot of these tracks on here are exclusive to this compilation, notably Acid Reign Joe Smooth, No Reason Chip E and Different World Hokus Pokus. Different World is an absolutely mental acid track that truly does feel like entering a different world, far the best track on here. Halloween House isn't bad, being an acid take on the Halloween theme tune, something Legowelt recently revived for Lost In The Ghetto for Marguerita. The Mike Dunn Track (MDIII Take Me There) is pretty good too, as is My Melody from Fast Eddie.

I'm no DJ and for most of my teens bought most of my music on cassette tape rather than vinyl. FFRR released these comps for most of the late 80's and there's normally an awful lot to recommmend on them. From exclusive tracks from DS Building contractors (a pre Orbital Phil and Paul Hartnoll)and Bang The Party, to decent acid by Silicon Chip and Jamie Principle.
One to look out for if you see it on vinyl or tape.

The first in a long line of Marguerita releases, that mix tracks from people you know with more obscure or new artists. The opener from Mike Dred isn't much fun at all, he did miles better on his Rephlex albums and here he treads water. The Nederzuur track is interesting, droned out acid lines and house beats which raise the bar for side two.
The Cane track isn't that memorable and is certainly forgettable, which leads me to Blue Morning Drive by Acidwolf. The best thing on here by a country mile, a simple vocodered song with a complex beast of a 303 line behind it, a true masterpiece that lifts the song from good to great.
Oasis (2) - Falling Down (A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble Exploding In Your Mind) - 16-Mar-09 09:12 AM
It takes something special for me to like any guitar music and this is something special. The base equation of two thirds psychedelia and one third 'FSOL' ambience, transform professional miseryguts Liam and Noel Gallagher into a seventies style loved up psychedelic wig out.
Sitars play and children sing, and that is only side one. Broken down into five parts the song is a testament to the skill of Brian Dougans and Gary Cockbain as it always sounds fresh and exciting.
