Profile: I'm an huge music fan from Montreal. I listen to vinyl when I can.

These days I listen to a lot of funk, afrobeat, island funk, current funk, and reggae. Favorites include Fela Kuti, Geraldo Pino, the Soundway label, Cymande, Tony Allen, Burning Spear, Poets Of Rhythm and the Tramp label, the Daptone label, and of course James Brown and related artists.

I also enjoy post-punk (Gang Of Four, Talking Heads), current punk-funk (The Rapture, !!!, etc.), and some funky latin (Ray Barretto, Fania).

Please Note: I file releases under my "Want List" as a reminder to myself for items that piqued my interest. Please do not contact me if you want to sell.

Nathan Bartell - Top Goin' Down, Goin' Up / Jody & John - 08-Nov-05 02:36 PM
Now, this is what a Funk 45 reissue should be all about. Rare as hell and two sides of amazing funk, made available to us peons that couldnt dream of owning an original even if we had enough cash. Side A is a superb track but the real gem here, as far as I am concerned, is "Jody & John" - while rough around the edges in terms of production as it was supposedly recorded in a single take, this rawness makes for a truely honest and charming piece. And add to that a fantastic relentless groove. Kudos to Fryer-Mantis for legitimately licensing this track so that Mr. Bartell can finally receive dividends for his efforts.

Daktaris, The - Soul Explosion - 14-Feb-05 01:23 AM
"It is all a big hustle." Thats what you get when you write out the track title "Eltsuhg Ibal Lasiti" backwards. And this was the first hint that The Daktaris "Soul Explosion" was not a reissue of some long lost Afro-beat gem but a masterfully produced recording by a contemporary band. Of course the Desco label is now well known for having attempted such deceptions. The Daktaris is an hommage to the Nigerian sound of Fela Kuti and was performed by a fledgling group that would become "Antibalas". The Desco version is extremely difficult to find making this reissue by Daptone highly welcomed.

Neapolitan Records - 18-Jan-05 02:19 PM
If their first three releases are any indication, this mysterious funk revival label out of Milwaukee Wisconsin needs to be taken seriously. Their blend of jazzy instrumental deep funk is as raw and dirty as anything released during the genres hey day back in the late 60s early 70s. Essential releases for neo funk-heads, if you can still find any copies!

Various - Ooh Ooh..! Hotpie & Candy Record's Original Raw Soul Vol. 1 - 16-Jan-05 01:34 AM
Although it sounds like an authentic rare funk collection, all of the tracks in "Original Raw Soul" were recorded under different pseudonyms by none other than The Poets Of Rhythm. They have fooled many virgin ears over the years (including mine!) - but thats only a tribute to the fact that these German white boys sure do know how to play it raw and dirty. The Poets Of Rhythm full multi-label multi-band-name discography is documented at Tobias Kirmayers Tramp Records website. An article on the subject was also written in Waxpoetics #3 (Fall 2002).
