Ministry - Animositisomina - 08-Jun-08 09:54 AM
As a bit of an amateur audiophile, I was quite excited to see this album available in DVD-Audio, 5.1 surround sound form. Mr. Haynes' 5.1 mix starts out great with "Animosity". Unfortunately, that's where the positives end. The rest of the songs seem lazily put together, with seemingly no difference between playing this vs. playing the stereo version in "surround mode".

Some may think that this genre of music does not lend itself well to the multichannel format. However, with the Jourgensen/Barker tendency toward experimentation, it can and does work here. Just listen to "Animosity" in surround, and you'll know what I mean. It's unfortunate that the same effort given to the first track was not given to the rest of the album.

Ministry And Co-Conspirators - Cover Up - 06-Apr-08 12:29 AM
Curious that Al would cover 70's rock songs after making a song called "70's Rock Must Die" with Lard. At any rate, this disc is quite good as a whole. It is not to be taken very seriously, though. This album was clearly made just for the fun of it. While most of the tracks are previously unreleased, "Roadhouse Blues", "Supernaut", and "Lay Lady Lay" appeared on earlier albums. The highlight of the disc, in my humble opinion, is "What A Wonderful World". I never thought Al could sing a "beautiful" song ... successfully! While Al has used the word "Love" in his songs before, I've never heard him say the phrase "I love you". Of course, being Al, he "punked" it up for the last half of the full version. And as a generous bonus, he tweaked the two parts of the song, and made two "edits" of the song (one soft and relaxing with no guitars, and one completely harsh and energized with PLENTY of noisy guitars.

Prong - Scorpio Rising - 17-Oct-07 06:13 PM
This is a disappointing effort, considering how great Prong's previous releases are. I would have given this album a 1/5 rating if it wasn't for "All Knowing Force". That bumped it up to 2/5. If Prong ever releases a "Best Of" album, "All Knowing Force" should be track one. However, none of the other tracks from Scorpio Rising should appear.

Overall, the riffs, vocals, etc. are surprisingly ordinary for Prong. If you have your hopes up after listening to their previous work, listen to this with caution. Keep your fingers crossed for their next album!

Corrosion Of Conformity - America's Volume Dealer - 09-May-06 05:39 AM
COC's AVD is their most pristine production to date. A very clean sound combined with the heaviness that is COC - great combination. The sound is additionally improved with the DVD-Audio, simply by the bit rate. The 5.1 sourround mix is mediocre at best, but the music alone makes this album worth it.

Corrosion Of Conformity - In The Arms Of God - 09-May-06 05:39 AM
Arguably their best album to date, COC went gutteral on this album. With an overt Black Sabbath influence, and even a dash of Pink Floyd, ITAOG is extremely heavy and extremely groovy. The entire album is tremendous, even the track order, saving the best for last with the title track. Truly epic.
