Tetsu Inoue - Object And Organic Code - 08-Sep-08 06:37 AM
Object and Organic code is one of Tetsu Inoue’s more difficult albums, but it is a very intriguing one. On a first quick listen the blips and bleeps seem omnipresent and leave you with a pretty synthetic taste, but the more you listen to it, the more it feels like all those busy buzzing bits are arranged in a gentle, not so chaotic way, creating this almost organic slice of world. And because all these little parts that make up the composition are so independently complex, they remind you of a thousand and one things you could witness in nature, in a city, in feelings, … In short: a very complex release pushing it to the edge of aesthetics with a title that in fact says it all.
Yannis Kyriakides - Wordless - 16-Jul-08 02:24 AM
Wordless is a collection of processed interviews from which all of the spoken words are cut, leaving only the emotions like laughter or sighs and an array of environmental noises. All this material is then rearranged in a structural, often rhythmic way and layered with drones and clicks matching or underlining the profile of the interviewee. This piece was originally commissioned by the ARGOS Festival 2004, ARGOS being a Brussels based center for contemporary audiovisual and visual arts.
International Peoples Gang - International Peoples Gang 0006 - 13-Jun-08 01:19 AM
Em:t 006 blew my fuses after the first minute with an unearthly kind of electrofied ambient dub track called “This One” that was so evergoing and trancing with it’s mesmerizing hushed vocals that I played it three times on a row. But it didn’t stop there: there’s more lush tranquil ambient, exhaling an intense gladness, followed by some reversed environmental ambient citysoundscapes, a beautiful (sic) symphony of iron files grinding their psychedelic indietronic escapade, … And you’re only half way ! There’s so much more marvellous approaches to discover that I can only describe em:t 0006 as the most innovative album I came across in the last years. They even manage to make an eye test sound sexy ! As most releases on em:t, alternative paths are chosen to create very refreshing pieces, while the main focus however will always remain on beauty. So when I say ‘beautiful’ I mean every letter of it: b e a u t i f u l
French Theory - Lost On The Way To Destelbergen - 20-Mar-08 10:14 AM
For some, the essence of new beat was the gloomy atmosphere, the slowly ever hitting repetitive beats, all crawling further at lo RPM, resulting in a trancey ambience far away from the poppy scene. This “Lost On The Way To Destelbergen” (Destelbergen was the home town of legendary and long gone club Boccaccio) continues on that path and is one hell of a dark soundscape hitting firmly while hovering on slightly dramatic strings. Was it 1988 or 2008? Timeless track!
Foolish Mind Featuring Ellice - Self Control - 10-Mar-08 06:22 AM
One of these little gems that probably is still piled by the dozens in some dusty warehouse. Sure it’s a cover of that major hit “Self Control”, but so what, the latter also was a cover of RAF’s Italo version and nobody seemed to complain about that. This is a fine production with a talented singer going for a less energetic, more bodied version with a powerful beat, fitting nicely in the young new beat scene of that time. The vocoder version even takes it one step further without overdoing things, making it my favorite.
