Theo Parrish - Space Station / Going Through Changes - 13-Jun-09 07:12 AM
Proper head jamming gear from Theo Parrish unleashing one of the most exciting Soul Signature tracks in years on the amazing 'Space Station' backed with a typical Theo soul cut on 'Going Through Changes'. So a little close attention reveals that the mind melting A-side is actually produced in conjunction with Omar-S, who is credited with "Sound Selection Arrangement & Engineering", with the "Written & Produced by" credits going to Theo. It's basically a proper club stunner, riding in with a scene setting intro before deploying a restlessly arpeggiated synthline that weaves it's way through the course of the track, with smudged and lively mixing techniques from the pair giving it a life of its own. Wait till you hear this out and listen for the sound of jaws dropping in the background. 'Going Through Changes' doesn't have the rush-of-the-new of the A-side but makes up for it with kinked rhythm tricks and buckets of gloopy Detroit soul poured all over the joint to keep the cool cats happy. Awesome.
Âme - Balandine EP - 31-Jan-08 11:21 AM
Every Âme track seems to be a vast, cavernous anthem, and this, their tribute to the Wild Pitch sound, is no exception.
For this Innervisions release, the follow up to ‘Rej’, they've ramped up the tempo and brought two tracks that are more twisted and closer to techno than any of their previous work. A hackneyed mission statement explains the shift in emphasis as a "move away from that clean sound that is penetrating us for the last two years". Âme are clearly feeling sore after this long penetration and are determined to tell the world they have never been "minimal", despite the fact that German artists distancing themselves from the m-word has become more boring and pointless than artists claiming the word ever was.
In any case, Âme should relax, safe in the knowledge that their sound is too bombastic and orchestral for them to be easily written off as one genre or another. This 12” is a case in point. It opens with ‘Balandine’, a scorching 12-minute techno track that sounds like Hardfloor channeling Detroit. The track is built around a red hot riff and swells to frenzied proportions numerous times in a ‘Mouth to Mouth’ style. It’s pretty much guaranteed to be ubiquitous this summer, but only at the most intense moments.
‘Enoi’ is equally manic and equally great. Once again the track is built around a heavily distorted bass riff. There’s no intro, just a frenzied opening two minutes before horns that evoke alien communication in old sci-fi movies, or a bassier version of Oner Ozer’s ‘Red Cabaret’, tear through the track. This is a more workable track than the more epic ‘Balandine’ but is equally unhinged.
After this, anyone who's ever found Âme’s deep house records "polite" may be converted, but perhaps some of their longer serving fans will feel a little alienated by this furious 12”. Still, when you leave aside the politics, the simple truth is that the Balandine EP is techno of a rare quality.
Kerri Chandler - The June 23 EP - 08-Jun-07 01:33 PM
This hot 4 track EP includes some powerful minimal deep house tracks with a techy touch. “Phuck This Cowbell” is an irresistible groovy track with solid percussive elements and great stabs, “That’s All I Needed” goes deeper with its gorgeous softer pads, while “The Machine", provided in two different versions, is a beautiful combination of underground grooves, deep atmospheres and electronic elements. Perfect for making people lose there sh*t, Kerri Chandler does it once again.
Kerri Chandler - Oblivion - 05-Nov-06 07:42 AM
On "Oblivion" Kerri Chandler lays down a piece of deep, percussive house (almost 10 minutes in length) that boasts a spoken male vocal discussing pretenders to house producer status and where they fall down - a track and theme that finds massive favour on more underground floors. Formats come complete with a vocal version and a slightly tougher dub that should prove a big one for fans of the darker side of Kerri's sound
