Various - XL-Recordings: The American Chapter - 20-Feb-08 06:06 PM
This mix is quite possibly one of the best mixtapes I own. The tracks are all anthems (+ a few lesser knowns) from the golden era of rave/XL Recordings, the mixing is spot on (I believe there's some 3 deck action too), and it just flowwwwwws from style to style. I've tracked down every tune on this mix for my record collection... it's just one of *those* mixes! It makes the individual tunes sound that much better for being part of the whole. Whoever mixed this tape, thank you!
3 Thieves & A Liar - In The House/ I Get A Chill - 29-Apr-07 04:50 PM
This record still doesn't have a comment, and that's just not right. Played in virtually *every* set Top Buzz ever did, "I Get A Chill" is among the best of the rare hardcore gems out there.
The hard noises, screams, & ever-so-slightly off-kilter beat combine perfectly with the classic vocal sample (where's it from???), keyboard vamps, and strings to make for a perfect tune that sits right in the middle of manic & soothing.
The other tunes on the EP lean more toward the twisted & manic vibe, and are good tunes themselves, but they come nowhere near the quality & vibe of "I Get A Chill".
Despite getting tonnes of play (especially by Top Buzz), this record remains a lesser known underground anthem, but it should have gained way more credit than it did in it's day.
Eze G* - Data-Dump EP - 17-Nov-06 05:37 AM
This EP sits nicely between 1992 & 1993, style wise. It's quite striped down and minimal, like a lot of 1993 releases. But at the same time, several tracks ("Yeah", "Me Want Sound") have some serious riffs & stabby patterns giving them that rushy 1992 vibe. "Me Want Sound" in particular sounds like it's straight out of a Top Buzz set circa 1992. Top EP from tha EZE-G. (But what's with "Yeah" ending cold in mid bar/phase??? You could have thrown a few bars on the end, eh guys?)
Calyx - No Turning Back - 22-Oct-06 01:42 PM
After hearing "Illusions" on a mix, I had to go pick this LP up immediately. This tune stands as one of the finest releases from 2005, and of recent jungle/drum & bass in general. Nicely chopped breaks that still step to their groove, grimey-rude bass, rave stabs, and 'nuff tension in the intro & breakdown make this a peak time monster-of-a-tune. On top of this, you get some other fine tracks in: "Thru The Eyes", "Get Myself To You", and "Dead Ringer" on the album pack.
I was always one to check out Calyx releases in the past, but the man really out did himself here. Must have business. Nice one.
Photek - The Seven Samurai / Complex - 25-May-06 03:32 AM
Photek - Complex. Probably Photek's best (and one of his last) releases in the atmospheric jungle/drum & bass style. Pure atmosphere & class vibes. Respect going out to Photek.
