Momus - Forbidden Software Timemachine - Best Of The Creation Years, 1987-1993 - 27-Jun-06 08:30 PM
A criminally underrated artist, Momus vast body of work is well served by this compilation of his Creation recordings. I would also recommend checking out the more recent material on his website (and make a donation whilst you're there). However, if evidence were needed that Momus' marriage of textured melodies and rich narrative lyrics has been long and fruitful, this is it.

David Gray - Please Forgive Me (Paul Hartnoll (Orbital) Remixes) - 28-Feb-06 07:54 AM
I don't know if it's my hearing or a mis-press, but both mixes on this 10" sound identical to me... Paul Hartnoll does a good job of beefing up a MOR, radio-friendly track, though a dub or instrumental wouldn't have gone amiss.

Glamorous Hooligan - Stoned Island Estate - 15-Jan-06 06:33 AM
Jacques Lu Cont delivers an electro classic, typical of his LRD material at the time, speeding up the rap and taking the sound back to the 1980s. Another favourite is the Regular Fries Reshuffle, which creates a very laidback groove. Most of the original vocals are ditched in favour of repeated refrains, including "Kojak is coming back"! Sounds very much The Sandals and all the better for it. The Local and Tranquility Bass remixes are nothing special.

Billie Ray Martin - 4 Ambient Tales - 10-Aug-05 07:07 AM
I think this is one of the greatest ambient/vocal records of all time. I was familiar with Billie from her work with S Express & Electribe 101, and had just bought her cover of Psychic TV's "Persuasion", so this was quite a change in style. The Grid's soundscapes & BJ Cole's pedal steel guitar perfectly complement the moving and heartfelt lyrics. Listening to this at night in my bedsit back in 1994, it sent shivers down my spine. No longer in a bedsit, but the music still has the same effect...! Absolutely essential.

Slick Sixty - The Wrestler - 08-Oct-04 11:21 AM
Justin Robertson's take on the lead track is very similar to his "Galactic Boogie Mix" of Apollo 440's 'Lost In Space' - lazily rolling beats, vocoders... but no trumpets!

Margo's B sounds like an amatuerish demo once compared with Mad Professor's masterful retake. Dub how it should be.
