Chemical Brothers, The - Brothers Gonna Work It Out - 08-Oct-06 07:33 AM
Hmmm
some great tunes on here...
.....but some of the tunes on here are basically ruined by some ridiculous looping malarky which at times reduces certain tracks in places to a reptitive one or two bar loops.

Take the classic break of "Hot Wheels-The Chase" for example they must loop the same few bars for about 5 or so minutes! Turning a classic break into boredom
Absolutely ridiculous!

Whilst the Live At The Social mix remianed a relatively straight-up sort of mix album the Chemicals got bogged down way too much in the studio over this mix album trying to force things to match and the end result is frankly bit poo in places.

Plus that Manic Street Preachers remix ........eurgh .

Dr. Dooom - First Come, First Served - 30-May-06 10:44 PM
Agree completely with comments above.
At the time i also remeber being a litte unmoved by the LP when i picked it up back in '99 .Whilst thinking it was alright still back then -i was bit underwhelmed by it . Maybe ppl like myself were wrongly expecting an Octagon MK 2 album or something , especially as this album seemed to have a "Dr" persona again.
Having said that - over time it has probably become one of my fave things Keith put out .
Lyrically darker than Octagon , less sex obsessed than Sex Styles ( ..er..of course) .
The production of the LP (kutmaster kurt) is great -dead simple - bare bone beats really - yet very fresh and punchy .. still today.
Keiths rhymes are really top notch here -Keith and whole Dr Oct thing did verge on gimmicky rhymes -here you still have some of the twisted humour of Oct but with some added darker weight with pissed off disses more reminicesnt of latter Ultramags.
Anyhow top LP

DJ Shadow - Funky Skunk - 22-Feb-06 06:14 PM
The added comments above are bit incorrect.
Sure Banner's "Play" (instr.) does pop up as does the Three 6 Mafia and Sikhh The Shocker tracks ...but there is no Beastie Boys or Public Enemy on here !! ....your way off the mark!
Shadow has dug a lot deeper than that for the old skool hip hop tracks that feature here . Think Black By Demand gets a play if i remember correctly.
A mixture of new & old hip hop with slices of funk , psych tinged soul along the way.
Other tracks that feature Common feat.Last Poets -The Corner (instr.) is cut up with Crime Mob-Knuck If You Buck (accapella) over it .
A decent enough mix ,some good blends ,some skills ...tho there is an exceptionally irritating interlude couple of tracks kinda halfway through (if youve heard it youll know straight away what im on about!).
Bit below par by his own mixtape standards...tho some good stuff on here

Various - Tribal Gathering '96 - 19-Sep-05 08:28 AM
Ahhhh - This was an often-overlooked yet well nice mix compilation.
3 completely different mixes .
The Gayle San mix serves up minimal techno /tribal affair which to be honest was bland at best (OK -bar the Space DJs track which was a special little track). Mostly average blends plus obligatory spinbacks ahoy -still San did her thing reasonably enough .
Marshall Jefferson -himself a house founding father delivers up a rather camp yet compentant house by numbers mix with a few gems courtesy of Basement Jaxx , Ian Pooley etc. Enjoyable enough stuff .
This mix compilation was really was only about the James Lavelle mix -which like the Cream Live 2 mix of the same year ('96) was mixed up by the Psychonauts. Still Lavelle was the "name" on the box ...still... but lets face it Lavelle cant mix for shit and hey looking back if you knew the Psychonauts -...well...you do the maths .
Although not as extensively mixed up as the Cream Live 2 mix -there is typically a great track selection with some very clever blends + some lovely cuts and plenty of additional scratching going on (not just skills for the sake of it -but some really fine moments -ie-DJ Crystal juggles before Peshay / sublime scratching over Shogun / the 69 outro bit) -The Psychonauts just had that knack of doing really beautiful mixtapes back then (ie-best Radio 1 Essential Mix ever also same year as this comp-ie-1996- to boot!!!) -skills + subliminal blends .Really good mix

Peshay - Piano Tune / Vocal Tune - 30-Jan-05 06:52 AM
Two top early Peshay toons. '94 was it??
Of course "Piano Tune" is an awesome (-yeh awesome! is the word ) piece of music - melancholy early jungle perfection + amen breaks aplenty -which may sound a bit dated by today standards but still sound phat- anyhow theres no knocking the hesitant crispness of those piano chords. Its Piano Tune. A proper tune indeed.
essential stuff
