Profile: I am not a DJ or "record collector", although one could argue that I do in fact collect records to some extent... you probably get the idea. I play both vinyl and CD. I listen to virtually any electronic music, although progressive psytrance has a special place in my heart. What I listen to on a particular day depends very much on my current mood.

Favourite artists: Der Dritte Raum, Son Kite, Doop.

My collection list is nowhere near being complete; I have a couple of hundred old CDs and CD singles that I haven't added yet. But I'm working on it.

I'm also in the progress of putting records up for sale, i.e., more is coming (mainly CDs and CD singles).

Since I have been chasing quite a few records through the years I know what it is like and I am always happy to help. If I don't sell my own copy, I may still be able to get another one for you. By all means, drop me a line. I may also be interested in trading, in the lucky but improbable event that we both have something that the other one wants! Have a look at my wantlist and you will get an idea of what I like. I may have forgotten to add something of interest to me.

So... here is how I rate a record:

5 - really good, all or almost all tracks are good. One of my favourites.

4 - The average of this record is not tops. One or more tracks can be real favourites, although some tracks may not be so good (on 12"es, typically one of the two tracks is great but the other one isn't). It may also be a record that for one reason or another means something special to me.

3 - an average record. Neither particularly bad nor particularly good, or just an equal mix of good and bad tracks.

2 - could be worse. Most of these will eventually be up for sale.

1 - couldn't be worse. Not thrown away only because I know that there just might be someone looking for it. Also a spare jewelcase. =)

unrated - I just haven't bothered to rate this yet.

Jaïa - Orchestra EP - 05-Feb-08 07:14 AM
"Orchestra 2.0" is based on a fun concept - including symphonic instruments into a psytrance track. However, that's pretty much all it does. There are a few short pieces of melody on piano and violin which are repeated over and over, and in addition to that, they don't sound very much like real acoustic instruments. Removing these instruments would make it a rather basic track with nothing new to offer.

The flipside is the sole reason I bought this release, since I already had the album, which contains the A side track. In my opinion this remix is the best production from Minilogue / Son Kite since "Receive" (NAJA 021). Almost 11 minutes of building up from a modest drumline with distorted piano samples, through analogue buzzes, comprising the tell-tale Son Kite break a few minutes from the end, to finally exploding into a multi-layered ending and then slowly fading out.

Fatboy Slim - Praise You - 01-May-07 05:30 PM
I suppose everybody has heard the title track by now. The interesting thing about this single is that the other tracks are exceptionally good (as opposed to the other Fatboy Slim singles I have heard).

"Sho Nuff" is a track that resembles much of the "You've Come a Long Way Baby" material - repeated undecipherable vocals and other samples, a break with vocals only and overall a cheery melody.

The "The Rockafeller Skank" remix (which, for some reason, is not on the "The Rockafeller Skank" single) is just adorable. This track has picked up a catchier, backbeat rhythm which feels faster although the BPM have not been altered, all the time going along with a soft bassline. The vocals have been cut differently and played around with, all resulting in a refreshing remix of a well-known hit.

Infected Mushroom - IM The Supervisor - 26-Apr-07 04:48 AM
Back in the days of Destination Goa, Infected Mushroom was to me just a name among others. This album was my first "real encounter" with their music, though. Today I can't remember why I bought it in the first place, but playing this at home made me think "this is genius!" Never before had I heard anyone use vocals in psytrance (except for the occasional sample from a movie or so), nor electric guitars or acoustic instruments to this extent! Having listened only briefly to their older tracks, it appears that what at first struck me as being typical Infected Mushroom had not always been like that, in that their older works much more resemble the "classic israeli" psytrance sound. However, they still manage to keep something in their music which makes them easily recognisable.

BP Empire is considered to be Infected Mushroom's first "experimental" album, according to comments here at Discogs. Being able to develop one's music and change style, which they have evidently done, and still keeping a distinct sound, is real strength. It's something that at least keeps me staying with an artist, the latest album, "Vicious Delicious", didn't disappoint me in this respect.

As for the tracks, both tracks on the A side and "Cities of the Future" ought to be the real dancefloor fillers on this one. All others, except the last track, keep around the 145BPM mark. The album is full of beautiful melodies and interesting tempo shifts, breaking the monotony which so often ruins otherwise good psytrance tracks.

Der Dritte Raum - Klubraum - 10-Feb-07 03:19 AM
It took me a while to fully appreciate this, being a real fan of the early Der Dritte Raum works. It does stray a bit from previous releases (if anything can be considered a "typical" Der Dritte Raum sound), though not as much as Distanz did. The heavy beats are back, but the trancey sounds from Raumgleiter are still gone and replaced with more groovy, less 4/4-trance-feel rhythms. The tracks within the album are rather different as well, which shows in the transitions. Der Dritte Raum beatmixes the tracks on all his CD releases, and on this album they are anything but seamless, for better or for worse.

Trimatic - Ride The Rim / Dirt Jaz - 09-Feb-07 04:39 PM
"Dirt Jaz" is just a common, 135 BPM monotonous techno track. "Ride the Rim" must be one of the fastest tracks that Trimatic / Son Kite / Minilogue has ever released, nearly 150 BPM and really driving. It has a cool break and a sample saying "Ride the rim, please...", otherwise they a soft, fast bassdrum and they seem to have experimented a bit with the effects. Although this is far from most of their other stuff, as well as rather short, this is a track that I really fancy.
