John Guldberg - 06-Jun-07 12:54 AM
Danish guitar wizard John Guldberg came early on the local recording session scene, for his amazing sense of timing and taste in what kind of guitar part would enhance a song, rather than having crazy egomaniac guitar stunts detract from it. He also was an early pioneer of synthesizer guitar sounds - using a guitar as if a keyboard synthesizer. Many times over, he got comments and questions as to "wheres the guitar on this track? I cant hear any!" having to answer "well... half of the synth sounds you hear are done with a synthesizer guitar".
Along with his partner Tim Stahl (vocals, keyboards) in Laid Back, Guldberg shared vocal duties with his baritone-like voice and also went on to write lyrics for the group as well as handling the mixing of their tracks more than often.
Ace Of Base - Everytime It Rains - 05-Jun-07 04:48 AM
"Everytime It Rains" was suggested... or rather imposed on Ace Of Base to record by none other than Aristas chief Clive Davis! A trio of songwriters were brought in: Maria Vidal, Billy Steinberg & Rick Nowells and a first version was recorded with the lead vocals of Jenny Berggren. When Clive Davis heard it, he said more or less "nice... but I want the BLONDE ONE singing it!". Sister Linn than went in, grudgingly, declaring "Ill do one take and thats it" - but what a take!
Disneyland After Dark* - Call Of The Wild - 05-Jun-07 04:46 AM
As Mega had decided to start up a Rock division appointing Frank Marstokk as the A in charge, demo tapes began to pour in by the dozen. There then was an A meeting to assess results that far. Frank stated "so far, nothing really interesting came in - except for something that sounds as if a bad joke... a band by the improbable name Disneyland After Dark!" and inspired by the Italian so-called "spaghetti Westerns" in the style of Sergio Leone with Clint Eastwood and Lee van Cleef! Following a complaint lodged by the Walt Disney company, they had to re-name themselves D.A.D. as of their next album and are now the top dogs in Danish Rock music.
Sabrina - 17-May-07 02:53 AM
Outside Italy, Sabrina is only known for her recordings but theres more to her story that just that...
She was about 13 when she was discovered by Genova-based manager Giampiero Menzione who saw in her a future pin-up girl at first. Within a short time, she became a dancer hired in by TV channel Canale 5 in Italy. At some point she was asked "couldnt you sing as well as you already dance in TV shows?" leading to the amazing success of the single "Boys" (mostly known for its video). At some point while moving about in a swimming pool during the video shoot, her bathing suits bra fell off. She imagined that the offending scene would be cut off... but the TV show editors left it in and actually enhanced the scene as much as possible, running it in slow-motion!
Generally, Sabrina is regarded as a black-haired version of the "dumb blonde" icon, but that is as far from the truth as can be. Besides a great ear for languages, she is also highly intelligent, a hard worker from early in the morning and a fast learner when having to quickly memorize choreographies and stage / TV moves so she also branched out to be a film actress. She is nowadays retired from active Pop duties but helps husband and producer Enrico Monti in nurturing new talent.
Laban - Caught By Surprise - 03-Mar-07 04:21 PM
"Caught By Surprise" was originally released by Mega Records in Denmark in local language as "Kun et sekundt" (just a second) but also recorded in English. It is as such a cover version of the rather obscure and unknown Italian song "Senza Tregua", recorded by Elite in the mid-80s. This track was licensed out by Mega to a wide range of countries and did well on charts around the World.
