Puissance - Let Us Lead - 29-Oct-04 12:41 AM
Puissance are the masters of fucked up militant neoclassical dark ambient and their debut album is definetley a strong one. Perhaps not as refined as their later releases on the small Polish label Fluttering Dragon, 'Let Us Lead'is still a chilling journey into the world of cold, hard fascist sounds. Dont sleep on this or any other Puissance release.
Various - DSCI4 Remix EP - 29-Oct-04 12:41 AM
An excellent remix package offered up by DSCI4, and definetly one for the melodic\trance drum and bass fans. The Ill.Skillz remix of 'Mutant' is amazing, with one of the coolest bassline melodies I've heard in DnB. The Astrosine and Cranium remix are both very tight, in particular the Astrosine remix with its great vocal loop and intro melody. 'Come Closer' is also a very competent remix, although I prefered the raw enegery of the original. Overall its well worth checking out, if only for the 'Mutant' remix.
Various - The Sideshow EP (Chapter One) - 29-Oct-04 12:41 AM
Not a bad EP, but definately not a super strong release. The 'Ruffed, Rugged & Raw VIP' is a confusingly boring amen rinse out, and without a doubt the weakest track on this EP. 'Toxic Shock' by Pendulum is a very good tune, although hard to mix properly, and a bit disappointing after the first 32 bars of the drop when the songs energy seems to disappear. 'Light Cycles' is fantastic, with its Klaus Schuzle style EM intro, which paves the wqay for a very tight, amen/bass workout. Solid work from Cartridge. My favourite though would have to be 'The Batcave' by Keaton and Nitrox. Although I didnt like it at first, this track definetly growths on you, and is quite similar instyle to Universal Projects 'Comin Thru', with huge smashing snares and a steady rolling beat, matched with deep dark sub bass.
Axis Of Evil - Scar / Twilight - 29-Oct-04 12:41 AM
Although I havent heard much from these guys (and they havent released much it seems)this 12" shows how capable they are. Both tracks display a very strong songwriting style, with razorsharp beats, and techy melodies that push the techstep sound into the 21st Century. Both songs display a wealth of musical ideas with their morphing progressions, never get boring or one dimensional. Excellent stuff.
Various - Skool Of Hard Knocks - 28-Oct-04 05:41 AM
I was a bit disappointed with this LP, although it has some undeniably strong tracks, some of them are nothing more than fillers. Comin Thru is the stand out track for me, and no doubt everyone has heard it before as it got rinsed in the clubs. Haters and bandsaw are also two very good songs, in particular 'Haters' with its epically (is that a word?) dark choirs and pinpoint drums. On the otherhand Antrim, Ego and Unreal are all a bit ho-hum, Unreal being a particular disappointment as on their own Concord Dawn and Illskillz are DnBs finest as far as im concerned, and their contribution left a lot to be desired. Ego is a great track ruined by a shitty mixdown. Nuff said.
