Universal Indicator - Universal Indicator Green - 16-Dec-03 02:11 PM
This is a superb 3 disc set. The 12" and 7" play at 45rpm but the 10" plays at 33rpm. Most of the tracks are in your face pounders similar to UI Red but personally I think these sound better as there's more going on. Particularly with the relentless percussion. The 12" has one rather uninspiring track that sounds like a dodgy slap bass funk thing, not really in keeping with the rest of the music. The second track on the 7" is beatless and is just soaring synth noise kind of like whale calls.
This set is generally attributed to being Richard D James (Aphex Twin) under the production guise of Tan-09.
The 'We are the music makers' website goes on to suggest that he is responsible for the 12" and 10" but the 7" is Grant Wilson-Claridge (Co-founder of Rephlex records).
The 'All Music Guide' website also states that James produced the 12" and 10" but attributes the 7" to Mike Dred (Kosmic Kommando) who is also rumoured to have produced UI Blue and UI Yellow.
AFX* - Analogue Bubblebath Vol. 3 - 16-Dec-03 01:57 PM
I hate to say it, but for vinyl junkies this is the version to have not the two originals. I used to own the AB3 LP and the later AB3.1 EP but this combination of the two is better.
On the original AB3 LP, two of the tracks played simultaneously. You had to turn the balance full left or right to hear them seperately which meant they only came out of one speaker. Here they play properly as seperate tracks. The three proper tracks from the AB3.1 EP are included here too, all that's missing is the 9 second sound of water going down a plug and the two and a half minute converstaion about the smell of shit!!??!!.
I do miss the packaging for the original AB3 LP but hey, it's the music that counts and you get a better deal with this re-issue. And believe me, the tracks on this are fantastic.
Brad Strider* - Bradley's Beat - 13-Aug-03 02:26 PM
I have the version of Bradley's Beat shown here. It states on the label that the 2nd side is Bradley's Beat part two running at 4:43 mins. In fact the track lasts for approximately 3:32 mins and is an entirely different track to the 1st side.
I also have a promo version of this 12" with a faint heart shape on the label and the 2nd side is approximately 5:30 mins and is yet another entirely different track.
Personlly, I think the two different b-sides are the better tracks on this release.
As to whether bradley Strider is really Aphex Twin - well, Grant Wilson-Claridge of Rephlex stated in an interview that it was Richard's equipment used but not him on the record. Mike of U-ziq reckons it's definately him. Considering Rephlex's deliberate mystery surrounding their acts and Mike's close friendship with Richard, I know who I beleive. Also, I have been reliably informed that the image used on the two releases is a guy called Manuel Sepulveda who is not known to have released anything else, and who is only credited for artwork on an Aphex release. This combined with the fact that Richard has DJ'd in the Netherlands as DJ Brad Strider suggests that he is one and the same. Finally, most of the tracks sound like him anyway.
