Moodorama - My Name Is Madness
Feb 19, 2009
Like memories recalled that we cannot have possibly experienced, deep, resonant, wonderful liquid tracks whose hooks and melodies will have you humming along, in the bath and down the street. The standout tracks on this little cracker are certainly among the best of the lounge crowd (Space Cowboy, Beatzekatze and Too Late among several others rating 5 out of 5 on my ipod). Like living through a 1960s party in a beautiful flat overlooking the beach in Rio, this will leave you similarly exhilerated, exhausted and slightly crumpled on the come down - This is a intelligent, musically accomplished and atmospheric 'keeper'.
Exquisite Corpse - Reassembling Reality
Feb 07, 2009
This is a superb EP, or perhaps a mini album of sorts. None of this material appears elsewhere as far as I know. Subtle, quiet yet danceable tracks that build and weave. The opener is, in my view a total ambient techno classic. Soft but 'large' crashes, like rocks coming together or a huge door punctuate a rhythm that develops a great hook. This is fairly understated head nodding material but with that early nineties aesthetic that seems so lost today. One of those long term favourites that gets dug out every so often for a bit of a boogey! Long live the EC.
Exquisite Corpse - Dream Night Dance Music
Feb 07, 2009
A cracking example of soft, intelligent ambient-techno workouts that I still return to fairly regularly. Sitting in a Tree (Time Flies) has an intensity and hook that builds nicely. All of the tracks here deliver something fresh and to think this was from 92! Both Psychick Warriors of Gaia and Exquisite Corpse created a sense of tribal techno that avoided the new ageyness or cheap feel of many other groups at this time. High recommended!
I've been going back through some of my archives lately and hooked back into PWOG's Biospheres again, what a great album this really is. I remember tracing a thread on the ambient email list in the mid nineties where some guy was relating how he had listened to this disc without any knowledge of the ambient music scene (this was still possible in the early nineties, remember). What was so interesting about the story was that this was also in the context of being out in the back woods, somewhere in mountains in north America. Apparently the tribal rhythms and deep vibe had really created an incredible atmosphere. I love stories like that. The music here is deep and 'tribal' and without managing to be at all 'new age'. What we get here are long ambient workouts punctuated with rhythmic, deep and organic house. To my mind this is a rare example of an electronic music album that is of its time (the wonderful emergence of the ambient scene in the early post rave 90s) and yet which transcends this period to remain sometime worth grasping in the current period. For the impatient among you flick to the wonderful track two and wave your hands in the air like a mad thing, in the front room and on high volume when everyone else is out of the house.
Zane Trow - For Those Who Hear Actual Voices
Feb 24, 2008
Room40 is a very cerebral label but this record just stands right out - this material would be at home in any Brian Eno-lovers collection as well as for those who just need music that is low key, emotionally inspiring and, that often absent quality to much contemporary ambience, warm. Trow manages to be self-effacing in a collection that gets right back to the basics yet also surprises with his imaginative approach. I have to confess to being what I would call a jaded listener, for people like me this music speaks volumes. FTWHAV's is a genuine highlight and lovers of all things ambient should track this disc down without further ado!
Various - Aurora 2

This is one of the best ambient compilations of all time. It manages to brooding while still being uplifting. For those who found the first Aurora a little testing at times this is the real deal and almost sounds like a completely different roster. For loves of FAX, Elektrolux and so on this will be a much prized addition to the collection. With Merck finishing as a label it has to be worth grabbing this one quickly. A vast moving cloud approaches, top notch stuff.
Seba

Think you don't like drum and bass? The intelligence, exuberance and beauty of Seba's work is likely to win most people over. The only downside is that so little is available on cd but the range of material is awesome. His Producer disc for Good Looking is hard to find but up there with the best of this vibe, there is progression, there is imagination and boy is there some bass. Seba moves between the space-tinged uplifting to the head shattering collaborations with other artists like Paradox. All I can say is that locking-on to this work has taken me on a mission through the best vein of bass workouts and quality dance. Check out his Svek contributions and the intensity and quality of the vinyl releases. Truly seminal, it only seems to get better and better.
Quench (3) - Dyn

People, more words on one of the most sublime releases in the IDM stable. This stuff just eats your mind from the inside out. If Autechre had continued from Amber this might have been the next logical step. It is cut to precision with melodies and hooks that drag you in and build in their intensity. Once I had listened to this disc a few times I found that I continued to have dreams with Dyn as their soundtrack, so unable was I to 'switch off' these tracks off in my mind. Im going out on a limb here but I would have to say that this has to be in the top 3 IDM releases of all time. Mind melting, intelligent, evoloving, often dark but with slivers of light and brilliance permeating throughout. Just beautiful.
MISTiCAL* - The Eleventh Hour
Oct 30, 2007
Overall this is a mixed bag and yet the highlights are so blindingly good that it is worth getting for these alone. Memory Jog is the kind of track that strikes me to the core of why electronic and dance music define my listening taste for the past decade. Sheer exuberance, delight, intensity and complexity. The drum and bass elements are subtle and intelligent enough to work for a diverse crowd. I felt let down by the stumbling bass and rap that opens this disc but overall this is a class act and I would snap up a new disc. Check the marcus intalex fabriclive 35 for further intelligent and life-affirming electronica.
Brown - Brown
Oct 22, 2007
This is one of my favourite RI releases, it is atmospheric while retaining random, edgy and occasional funk elements. This is where I started in the catalogue and many dollars later I have most of the early releases as well. Brown is a complex mix of tracks that moves from very minimal to experimental and humorous tracks. Several of the tracks are very quiet and understated while others use computer generated voices (one overlaying a voice counting backwards and another forwards is pleasantly disorienting) and use bass to good effect. The closing spinning out of 'Music' winds on and is really a magical ambient exploration. Really beautiful stuff. | ||||
