Christmas (3) - Heritage
Dec 30, 2008
Christmas were a short-lived band from Oshawa, Canada. Lead singer, multiinstrumentalist and composer, Bob Bryden, put Christmas together on December 25, 1969. It was a rare specimen of unique Canadian progressive Hard Rock until the Rush era. The album Heritage was recorded by Terry Brown, the future producer of Rush, and released in the end of 1970. It demonstrates powerful and hypnotic guitars riffs from the golden era of Rhythm and blues, solid and raw sound with a tendency to musical evolution. Although all the members were very young (youngest Tyler Raizenne and Rich Richter were just 16 years old), their music was quite strong and original.
Delirium (5) - Dolce Acqua

This is one of the most beautiful touches for me with really classic Italian Prog. It contains an excellent mix of Jazz, Prog and Folk. They used rather many musical instruments, like keyboards, percussion, acoustic guitar and particularly flute. Electric guitar didn't find a place among them, but their Prog Music was based on expressive flute and inventive keyboard playing. And don't forget to mention beautiful vocal parts, which I like so much! Most of the songs were written in rather light melodic manner, typical for 70's Italian Prog with ma. I would like to mark the most expressive part of the album "Movimento II (Dubbio)" with real Prog elements and strong syncopes. But at the same time, "Johnnie Sayre (Il Perdono)" contains some psych elements. The last song on my CD is a pleasant ballad "Jesahel", which had great success in 70's.
All the music and lyric is written by well-known tandem Ivano Fossati-Mario Magenta. The first one became a very popular figure in Italian music, and he left the band after their successful release. | ||||
The actual album is a bit better, than its immediate predecessor. If you are searching for some kind local art-rock you must taste it. The band uses unusual national instruments, like gidzhak and others.
Their compositions are sometimes very light, sometimes quite strong and deep, but based mainly on national folklore and poetry. In the latter case I would mark A1 and B4 with a couple of various keyboards. I also recommend to listen their colourful ballads and romances with irreproachable lyrics, but sometimes they are a little monotonous.
There are three main genres in the music: Art-Rock, Jazz-Rock and poppysh Folk.
