Basement Jaxx - Rooty Mar 04, 2004
An album that is not only dancey, but good for headphone listening as well. Rooty is a house album w/ many influences. "Romeo" the first track, is probably my favourite and is also the perfect intro.. a bittersweet song with an infectious beat. "Breakaway" is an awesome track as well, mixing minimal house with a rolling bass line and lyrics about escaping makes this one of my anthems. The rest of the CD makes its way through many genres and is entertaining the whole way through. (although "SFM" is my least favourite track, it is still way ahead of many of the other house producers out there) Go see Basement Jaxx in "concert" if you want to truly experience this CD!
Mystical, sensual, thought-provoking, political, and with a beat you can dance to Essence is what music today should be! Louise Rhodes, Wendy Page, David Simpson, and Lady Kier provide excellent vocals to match AGCG's amazing breaks. The production of the album alone is awe-inspiring, but add beautiful vocals and meaningful lyrics to make the ideal perfect album. High points include the introspective Bell and Bass track "Humanity" a jazzy break w/ bells and synths plus Louise Rhodes' singing about breaking free of humanity to become something more (?), "Could You Understand" is a ragga style breaks track with pumping bass about understanding the difference between life in the innercity and anywhere else (?) w/ David Simpson trying to explain to us and questioning if you'd ever really know what it's like, and "Beaches and Deserts" a slow summertime track about knowing every region of a person's personallity, very relaxing, comforting, and almost epic in it's style. Every track is great though, not one miss on the whole album!
This mix album has some of the best dark drum and bass you can find. Not only an awesome selection of the best of drum and bass, but mixed amazingly. Dieselboy knows what to play when, but he can seamlessly blend the tracks together... I first bought this 2 disc set (the second being Dieselboy's original stuff) because I was into more of a hardcore beat and a friend suggested I might like it. I was changed afterwards. This CD proves that electronic music is an evolution; changing, growing, adapting to new environments, and becoming more and more intelligent. Reminiscent of raves and UK DnB clubs, this CD is essential for any fan of electronic music.
Dark, disturbing, and harsh! Some 'snares slower stuff.. incredibly well produced. Favourite tracks include: Intense Demonic Attacks (creepy intro, pulsing bass hook, spoken samples added to perfection, Come to Daddy style screaming over schizophrenic beats, just plain evil), Cruel Whole (star wars samples barely recognizable till the track picks up into a frenzy of lightsabers clashing and duel of fates chorus, chopped up into intense breakcore madness), Agap (harsh beats, chopped up, slowed down vocals that morph into dense breakcore and filtered scratching), and Punishing The Atoms (offbeat hardcore track w/ creepy sampled spoken words and a glitchy feel). Wonderful album! This is the one that got me hooked on Venetian Snares.
