Pepe Deluxé - Spare Time Machine - 05-Nov-08 07:23 AM
Pepe Deluxés third album wont let the listener off very easily. Created with an enormous amount of performers and self-styled instruments this album is about as far away from the debut album as possible, yet a completely logical follow-up for 2003s Beatitude.
The tracks are a mish-mash of styles, bouncing and twisting and more often than not ending a completely different way they started. It certainly takes a few listens to get into - I must admit I didnt care for it much first - but when you get into it, youre really blown away.
Its rare to hear an album nowadays that completely throws away the rulebook and pop music conventions and does whatever the hell it feels like. This album sounds fresh, yet strangely vintage at the same time. A true modern classic.
Yello - Pocket Universe - 17-May-08 04:21 PM
If you only know Yello from novelty tracks like "Oh Yeah", this really is the album you should be listening to.
This album is filled with lush ambient soundscapes and trancey sounds, some of which didnt hit the mainstream until years later. Theres also this constant dark undertone running throughout the album that makes it particularily special for me. I couldnt pick a favourite track off this album because to me it sounds like its a piece of work that should be rated as a complete piece rather than picking apart the individual tracks.
This is undoubtedly one of my favourite albums of all time - the only thing I dont like is the album cover, but thankfully its the music that matters.
Echano - Nothing To Live For - 10-Oct-06 07:47 AM
The original mix is a prime example of how uplifting trance used to be in its peak. It starts off very slow and keeps building up the momentum up until the break, which is nothing short of breathtaking. A massive, emotive break is followed by a huge main section... and as if that wasnt enough, the track keeps building in the main section as well up until the point where it all breaks down for the outro. Works perfectly bridging together progressive and uplifting trance in a DJ set.
The Gareth Emery remix, on the other hand, just takes a snippet of the melody of the original and does the usual by-the-numbers trance treatment to it. Its very uninspired and sounds like mr. Emery really didnt even put much effort in it, but it does the job on the dancefloor.
