Reviews & Discussion: The feeling of solitude and sadness runs straight through this album, although some might say that some of the compositions are melancholic for the sake of it. The beats are as you would expect from Mr Funk, frantic, organic and all done in weird 7 beat time signatures. Track 3 (Gloomy Sunday) makes excellent use of an old croon sample, and builds up to one of the most apocalyptic climaxes i've heard in a long time. Maybe it isn't consistently jungle orientated, but it is an excellent listen, and makes excellent use of classical elements. I have to say that Children's Limbo is absolutely perfect right down to the smallest hi-hat touch, he puts some excellent acoustic drum breaks with an organ and violin, and combines them with the dirtiest bassline you've ever heard. And the twinkling eerie section in the middle isn't the best thing to listen to in a dark room on your own:
'theyre damned, forever, think about it, try to imagine the end of eternity, close your eyes, close your eyes and try to imagine it, forever, pain, forever....pain.....forever.........think about it....' I hope other people can experience what i did first time i heard this. Well worthy of your purchase, and there are also some unusual time signatures. Top notch. Kinda definitive. if you like your beats not overly-glitchy then buy this, Port Rhombus is possibly the best tune ever, Problem Child is funky as hell, although some of the breaks are repeated a bit much. Masif (Stay Strong) is top also, some crazy bass workouts. he uses a lot of retro computer game style sounds which is allways good. better to get the US version otherwise this might be a bit weak. peace. I thought this was an excellent purchase, Laughable Butane Bob sounds alot like Add n to X in a very upbeat sort of way, and Custodian Discount is v. reminiscent of Freeman Acid (a collaboration with Squarepusher i believe). Arched Maid is top notch, and the synths sound very much like a wah pedal, and he uses some excellent distortion on it aswell. An excellent ep with some great analogue sounds, my favourite melodies are on Every Day. | ||||
