Alec Empire - Bass Terror - 09-Sep-09 10:17 PM
Here it is... the holy grail for fans, vinyl rarities with small pressings on CD for the first time. Its not all sugar and sunshine though, the mastering is noisy. You would hope after a few decades of production Alec Empire would be able to properly master his music, but perhaps thats not trendy enough.

Overall a great release, must have for fans, hopefully this is a sign of things to come, there are still a ton of vinyl exclusives and various artists compilation exclusive tracks out there which would benefit from a similar collection.

Very great early classics on here, a nice snapshot of times that have passed, essential breaks, distinctive hardcore, distinctively alec empire : 5/5

Alec Empire - Digital Hardcore E.P. - 12-Jun-09 02:05 PM
Well it looks like Alec Empire has lost the masters to his vast archive or early jungle, drill n bass and vinyl exclusive tracks. I remember purchasing the DJ Mowgly EP off his former digital-hardcore download store (back then it was only mp3). But rather than offering high quality vinyl rips in this instance he decides to offer tracks that we can already get elsewhere on CD without mentioning anything to the fans about alternate versions being offered! The original vinyl was limited to 1,000 copies so this seemed like the best opportunity I was going to get to pick up this single of rare mixes for a reasonable price.

If you are looking for rare Alec Empire, you might as well skip over this and pick up the CD compilations which come with other rare Alec Empire productions.

Kool Keith - Lost Masters Volume 2 - 26-May-09 01:53 PM
This album is pure, unadulterated Kool Keith. It has minimal beats and allows Kool Keith to flow in a very raw style. He isnt reliant on hooks or catchy lyrics. This album does not have the glamour which is usually associated with rap releases, its lyrics are very gritty, descriptive and apathetic. I would say that this album is one of several litmus tests for the true Kool Keith fan and has become one of my favorites. Good to listen to when you are in a dark, brooding, arrogant mood.

WC - Guilty By Affiliation - 15-May-09 03:07 PM
When you have 600gb worth of music it is easy to dismiss an album. Im not sure whether I did that in my previous review, however be sure this album is worth it. WC is easily one of the best rap musicians. Rap is a dying genre, however I will always have WC to remind me of the height of this genre. WC has never been a #1 selling artist (as far as I know) and the reason is simple; he is much more concerned about quality than anything else. This album is necessary for any WC fans. Like many other rap artists, I wish WC would break away from the typical gansta rap style; while his voice is certainly unique, i wish his style would take a unique turn (in the manner, not style, of European rappers). What can be said of WC? The same thing that can be said of Ice Cube, he is an incredible vocalist/lyricist without a unique-enough direction. This album should kick ass for the average intelligent gansta-rap fan, but the true connoisseur wishes WC would accomplish the role of innovator in music rather than simply delivery.

Earth (2) - 07-Mar-09 01:23 PM
Earth is ambiance/drone with guitars. While I listen to a lot of electronic + drone, when I go back and listen to Earth, Sun O))) or Boris I am reminded how versatile a guitar can be, especially with the right processing/effects. When a listener grows out of the stage of just listening to commercial music, the listener can easily become drawn towards deep electronic/synthesized sounds and completely dismiss the guitar as a boring instrument of pop rock. However lacking in versatility the guitar may be to modern electronic sythesis, the guitar has a unique sound and is the last instrument from the classical music period that gets used often in modern songs. Bands like Earth exemplify one of the few facets of guitar music that is overlooked, its pure sounds, its sustain and its bold Western-Movie-Soundtrack feel. If you are looking for something more progressive listen to Boris.
