Profile: I don't sell CDs or give copies away for anything that is still available (including on eBay - where I purchase a lot of my CDs)! I extend the same rules to buying or trading CDs. Since I do my mixing on computer (mockings to /dev/null) I'm mostly interested in CD releases, but unfortunately some of the really good stuff is still only available on 12"...

"Grind" and "Chill" are apt descriptions for these two sides. The Grind side is somewhere between 150 and 170 BPM and is definitely what I would call classic techno - buzzing bass lines, vocal samples amongst sweeping phased synth arpeggios, relentless drums. The Chill side is more mellow, slower, and shows a lot of variation and atmosphere - "Unnoticed" in particular is very evocative. "I Need Eternity" is a contrast on that side - its obviously beXtas first single and the rest of the tape has much better production; but even then it shows raw promise. From this tape, though, beXtas style has evolved to be more commercial, ravey and moody. This, if you can find it, is good stuff.

Rogue Element (2) - Premonition - 27-Oct-05 11:02 PM
You could have fooled me into thinking this was Tangerine Dream in their late 1970s experimental phase! Falls The Shadow in particular is reminiscent of the Phaedra and Stratosfear albums, with long progressive developments of atmosphere over driving, heavily sequenced electronic sounds. Sure takes me back! Great stuff!

Tangerine Dream - The Private Music Of Tangerine Dream - 27-Oct-05 11:02 PM
This compilation is taken exclusively from the Lily On The Beach, Miracle Mile, Optical Race and Melrose releases, and as such is much more representative of TDs 1980s FM synthesis sound than their earlier, more experimental analogue era. The tunes are slick and polished, the tempo and style remains constant throughout, and theres little to differentiate one track from another. Good as a sampler of what they were doing during this time but buy the albums instead if youre collecting the whole set.

beXta - Skirmish (Live EP) - 03-Oct-05 10:23 PM
There are a fair number of albums out there with big-name DJs producing a style which is quite different from what the fans expected from their mixes - e.g Sashas Airdrawndagger, Oakenfolds Bunkkaa. This is not one of them - quite. Although beXta was a music maker before she became a DJ, she has released several mix CDs and is more famous as a DJ in Australia now than as a producer of music.

While fans of her sets shouldnt expect this to have the same classic techno/trance sounds, it is definitely true to beXtas form as a producer. Decoder is, IMO, the best of these - classic punishing techno with industrial overtones. The rest of the album is more clubby or ravey and is definitely not in the same genre as her mix CDs. However, its still classic rave, and as such deserves listening just for that. Its obvious, at least to me, that beXtas production and writing skills have improved since her first album.

X.Dream* - We Created Our Own Happiness - 03-Oct-05 10:23 PM
This is as good a sample of classic Psy-trance as any. Lots of long, building synth sound with a bit of variation and a few samples thrown in to keep things going. Best track IMO is The Second Room, and Relaxed Vortex is great for the slow driving vibe.
