Sasha - Invol2ver - 01-Nov-08 01:38 PM
What can be said about Alexander Coe, AKA DJ Sasha, that wasnt already said or written? Probably not much. Many DJs and Producers in his caliber and age are long gone into the oblivion, the Hollywood honey trap or jumping from one rehab institution to another. Not Sasha. 4 years after successfully blurring the lines between terms DJ and Producer with his seminal Involver compilation/album/DJ mix hes back with this, second installment in the series. And while its less genre defying and more straightforward club oriented compilation its once again sends copious amounts of sheer brilliance through the whole 73 minutes of this CD. This one is a must for everybody who LOVES Electronic Music and it doesnt matter what color are your pants and with what hand you shake your glowsticks. This is one of the few 2008 releases that you just cannot miss!
Ticon - [2am] - 11-Feb-08 09:03 AM
The Swedish duo Filip Mårdberg and Fredrik Gilenholt are back with a 4th album on their regular Digital Structures label. Its been over 2 years since their previous hit release "Zero Six After" and the anticipation (by me anyway) was pretty immense. In this period the guys didnt release any new material besides one track under their NDSA alias with Emok in 2006 (Harbour Candy) which was quite a big hit and received a fat remix by Solead. So is this one any good you ask? The answers right after the commercials...
1987 Starts the album with big epic a-la Jean Michel Jarre feeling all over. This is a track that will light up many sunrises for a few good parties in the near future. Very high on the cheese factor, true, but sounds like it was made with pure intentions. So Ill let it slide, with the knobs all the way right. Zebra Beat takes into somewhat minimalish territory with some corny male chanting in the background "This is in your noise, this in your sound". Sounds a bit like what Ticon would do if Trentemoller was around the block. Fat crunchy tune. Another sure hit. Models on Cocaine I first heard almost a year ago when the guys performed live in Israel. Already there it sounded like a sure hit. A bit like Beckers Switch but with Kraftwerk influenced computer vocals. This one I try to listen as less as possible so it wont hunt me too much at parties when the season returns. "Sniffing at the Catwalk"! Weekend Warriors is this albums heavyweight champion in my opinion. It has some of that "In the dirt" vibe from their previous album with precise circular layer upon layer buildup that just makes deep holes in the dancefloors. In my opinion, and Ive heard it only around 50 times so far its almost as nearly as great as Extrawelts Soopertrack and thats says plenty. Best track of the album. Spitfire goes further into the dirty minimal techno regions. Very German sound in this one. Almost D-Nox & Beckers like in the beginning but towards the end it becomes a bit insane with some crazy scratchy sounds. Demented tune. In the Box is the first letdown of this album. Its downright cheese-fest powered by uber silly female vocals that just dont pass the test. Skip Were Shining is another vocals heavy tune. Although this time its almost bearable and the distorted Bass Guitar sounds so fucking great. The climax is going to be probably the biggest hands in the air point of this album but hell its not that bad. 2 AM, the title track is slow building tribal electro number with deep and subtle melodies. The track has a very special atmosphere that reminds me a bit some old Sasha and Digweed material for some unknown reason. Very nice set filler i guess. Less is More, the closing number reminds me a lot the first track. Although not nearly as big but has that same positivity charge. A great example of a track with a rolling bassline that just does the job without falling into all sorts of genre cliches. Perfect way to close the album.
Conclusion: All in all the Swedish boys has done it again, for the 4th time. Although this time they let inside what is arguably their worst track ever (in the box) but also some of their best ever. If you loved their previous work and if you love melodic morning sound and dont get rash from words like electro and minimal techno than get this ASAP.
BT - This Binary Universe - 28-Dec-07 05:13 PM
BT is the artist name of Brian Wayne Transeau, one of the most influential electronic musicians in the 90s. A man who almost single-handedly defined epic trance together with Sasha in the beginning of the 90s stood in the middle of 00s with a big dilemma. He had a choice to release another crowd pleasing pop candy album like his previous "Emotional Technology" album or to continue exploring the uncharted water and to experiment with his amazing technological and musical skills. Something that he started not long ago with highly acclaimed soundtrack for the movie "Monster". Lucky for us and probably for him too, he decided to experiment. This is BTs 5th studio album and once again after many years he starts something totally different and dare i say the G word, groundbreaking. What we have here is 7 tracks on the Audio CD and 7 tracks on the DVD that contain some of the most mindboggling sonic experiments that interlace with complex musical structures. Some of it may sound very weird for somebody who is used to the western 4/4 time signature, but i assure you that in the end it worths the effort. It wil be highly unjust and perhaps even boring to review the tracks one by one because the tracks themselves are built from little tracks and some tracks have the same theme but with different variation. This whole album is a journey, a journey by a classically trained musician that utilizes the modern technologies and plays with them with the joy of a little kid that got a new toy. Some parts are very minimal and might challenge your patience, some parts are too maximal and might force you to lower the volume. The CD was mixed on 5.1 setup and the original mix can be heard if you play the DVD version on a DTS compatible system. The DVD contains the videos for all the tracks and although they can be skipped some of them are really good and worth checking. The CD is mixed in Stereo and is compatible with the regular Audio systems. I can easily write thousands of words on that album but it wont matter a bit. My only problem with this release is the fact that the tracks are not mixed continously. But thats really negligible.
Bigwigs - The National Heroes Of Sonic Parallel - 02-Dec-07 11:31 AM
Bigwigs, or as their parents call them Grzegorz Magnuszewski and Jurek Przezdziecki (I’d like to hear it spelled correctly one day btw) are Psy Trance scene’s Monty Python or perhaps judging by the cover maybe the Village People. This is their second album and they have undergone a small change of their original team for this one. Tomek Roehr and Jerzy Przezdziecki (Praecox) left the team and instead of them Jurek Przezdziecki (Kino Oko) joined the effort. The 3rd and the 4th track were co-written with Tomek but the rest is Grzegorz and Jurek. The album was released on Horns & Hoofs Entertainment which is the Polish/Russian branch of the infamous Boshke Beats records which is run by the energetic DJ Alex Boshke. The first thing you notice is the cover of the album which is with no doubt the gayest Psy Trance cover I’ve ever seen, second only to Jorg’s compilation with a giant phallus (or a sword, I don’t remember) on a cover. The cover was skillfully designed by Inga Burina, who restlessly designs some of the best covers in the Psy Scene. As you might have expected from those guys, their weird sense of humour is an integral part of their music. It is with no doubt very, very hard to write about their music because it’s so god damn unique. It definitely reminds remotely Suomi Trance with the overall funky wacky weirdo attitude and the strong will to sound as much different as possible to absolutely everything else in the scene at the moment. What differentiates them, in my opinion, from the Suomi Trance I think, is the very high level of musicality in this album and the very high production level. Those guys are as good musicians as they are good sound engineers. Throughout the whole album the bottom end is a pure bliss, the high end is crispy and the mid is vivid and mud free. It is really hard for me to go track by track in this album but I’ll sum it up like that: If you like Extrawelt’s and Sensient’s groove and sound and like the wackiness and free spirit of Suomi Trance look no further. This album is unique and definitely shines out from pretty much everything is released nowadays.

Ace Ventura - Rebirth - 05-Oct-07 05:21 AM
Unless you have been living under the rocks in some Afganistanian cave you should already be familiar with Ace Ventura and with Iboga Records. If youre not, i can only suggest you pressing pause on your Astral Projection mini discs and smell the espresso. This is Aces debut album and he releases it after a string of pretty successful single tracks on Iboga and Echoes records to name a few. The album consists of 8 tracks and one short intro in the beginning. So whats on the menu? Serenity Now, a small homage to Seinfeld, starts with indeed a quite laidback vibe, a nice taste of what comes next but not much more than that. The 3rd track, Psychic Experience, that was written with Mr. Capo aka Liquid Soul, a core member in the Iboga family with one hit album out. In this track, their second one together they really kick off the album. This is a firm dancefloor killer with catchy sample and strong rhythm. The 4th tune named Sao Paolo is the first barbaric track in this album. It presents Aces trademark full-on in guise of progressive sound and this tune already causing havoc everywhere its played. Including in Petach Tikva. Stimulator, the 5th track was co written with Dani Keinan, aka, Intelabeam. Although this track sports really cool trippy sound it fails to really deliever. Some nice moments there but unfortunatelly nothing more than that. Presence, the 6th track is another barbaric monster. Heavy pounding beats that only towards the end leave some space for a tiny, yet efficient melody. Play it till the neighbours call the police. Mars is next and its yet another stormer, fortified with a sample from the cult Total Recall movie and some vitamin 303 to send you back to the happy 90s. Youll dig to this one without asking. The 8th track was co written with Lish and its probably the biggest hit here and if youve been to a party lately there is no way you couldve missed it. This is a long, 10 minutes epic, with some serious hands in the air melodies and rhythmic changes. Killer one. The album is closed with Exposed. Its as expected more laidback tune, cant say it stands out in any way but after the track that came before not many tracks would.
Bottom line: If you love your trance gentle but pounding. Melodic but not overly cheesy and if you enjoy the Iboga sound this album is a must. I think it tops easily everything they have released this year.
