Only Child - Solitaire - 21-Nov-03 02:38 PM
Stunning second LP from Only Child, hip-hop-soul-house and a whole lot more...Grand Centrals finest drops the much anticipated follow up to Satelites and Constelations at long last, and he has come up with another Manc classic... Featuring guest vocals from the old favourites Veba and Kriminul from Da Jigmastas, our new favourite Niko and the excellent Amp Fiddler from Detroit, the album goes through many styles and tempos but always with loads of soul. The album sets out in style with the future classic U Bring Me Vibes with the genius vocals of Mr Fiddler, and is followed by Addicted, which is already kicking off on the dancefloor of every club Ive been to in the past couple of months - very big. Kathy Brown adds her lung power to Fall Downs uptempo disco-fied breaks. Memories is the albums first hip hop number, another that is getting big support on the radio with its soulful vocal sample and moody piano. Niko adds her vocals to the midtempo groove of Show Me Love, another funky floor filler with a few well edited samples. I Love You So and Loves Reprise show the effect of the Electric Chairs dancefloor madness - soulful house grooves that Osunlade would be proud of, before dropping the tempo for the beautiful The U In Me. Another uptempo disco groover follows before Amp Fiddler again appears on the downtempo Find A Way. The album draws to a close with another blissed out beats number. Great packaging too, check the cut out sleeve so you can play your own game of Solitaire. Justin has really pulled it out of the bag here, one of Grand Centrals best ever releases and sure to be at the top of plenty of those Best of 2003 lists. Everyone with an interest in new music needs this LP now!
Only Child - U Bring Me Vibes - 21-Nov-03 02:36 PM
Disco bomb with the stunning vocals of Mr Fiddler, and superb remixes from DJ DSL and Mantis.First official single taken from the excellent Solitaire album is one of the collaborations with the new Detroit wonder kid Amp Fiddler. He has working in the past with Bootsy Collins, Carl Craig, Moodymann and now our own Justin is added to the list! Mantis Recordings (home to Atjazz) give us a proper old school US garage mix, even using that organ bass sound made famous by Robin S. Our friend from Vienna, DJ DSL weighs in with two awesome mixes, mix 1 is a half speed head nodder using whistling to great effect, that keeps on building - a clever mixing device, or a horizontal classic for these sunny days. Mix 2 is a real belter - midtempo breaks and a bluesy guitar riff are added to make a real classic remix. Awesome and Essential music from Manchester.
Only Child - Addicted - 21-Nov-03 02:33 PM
One of the standout tracks from the second album gets a deserved single release - this track has already received big club play thanks to its good-time disco feel and another great vocal from local lass Veba. Underrated French producer Llorca adds synth bass and Prince style electronic disco action and turns in a minimal squelchy dub too. Man of the moment Yam Who comes out of the shadows on his mix of the other Amp Fiddler track from the album Find A Way. Yam brings in his own instrumentation with Little Rico on percussion and Chaz Jankel on keys (the legendary keyboard player from Ian Durys Blockheads no less!), and this is an anthem in the making! A long jazzy piano solo with Amps vocal before the midtempo house beats kick in, this will take the roof off the right club at the right time.
Niko - You're My Favourite Music - 14-Sep-03 01:09 PM
This is Niko's second 12", following on from the much lauded 'Sound Off', where she delivered an army marching song style vocal over Riton's angular beats. 'You're My Favourite Music' is a completely different kettle of fish – a too-damn funky break, killer synth hook and a twist of screaming guitar - this driving tune lets Niko let rip in her own distinctive style and further reveals a little more of what this talented songstress has in store for us.Since releasing ‘Sound Off’, Niko has featured on Mr Scruff's recent album and has contributed to Only Child's second album 'Solitaire' both by providing backing vocal samples on a number of tracks and up front on 'Loves Reprise', originally called 'Niko's reprise'. The Aim Live band have also been playing 'You're My Favourite Music' out in recent tours with Niko starring. The 12" is remixed by Only Child and The Nudge - making it a must for any dancefloor worth its salt!
Riton - Cast Of Thousands / I Found My Love - 14-Sep-03 01:08 PM
Since Henry Smithson, better known to most as Riton unleashed his debut album 'Beats Du Jour' on an unsuspecting public he has gained the title of the 'Producers’ Producer' from critics the likes of Trevor Jackson, Eddy Temple-Morris & Black Strobe. His avant-garde take on bleeps and beats incited many to seek the Riton remix treatment. As a result Henry has reworked a wide range of artists from Run DMC and Martina Topley Bird (one time Tricky collaborator), to Ralph Myerz and The Human League. Machine produced beats that sound like samples of feed back and electronic equipment sliced into each other – guaranteed to make you smile! On the flip 'I Found My Love', offers us a look at the tamer side of Riton’s musical invention.
