Nu NRG - 24-Oct-05 11:21 PM
Well, very interesting that no-one has found it prudent to mention these two.
A very original sound regarding their arrangement and style; I've been following their material pretty closely since they hit it big with "Dreamland". Their tracks are living proof that melodic trance can still be epic and hard without becoming cheesy or formulaic.
Want hard and techy? try "The Mind" on the Connective EP. Care for something with great vocal accompaniment? Try their remix of Sunblind's "Believe". Or, if you want to see some real production talent as far as chord structure, cadence, and phrase, look no further than "Le Mirage" another brilliant track from the Connective EP.
Really, Nu-NRG's music can be the perfect compliment to any trance set. Whether Hard Dance/Trance in general, Psytrance, melodic, down-tempo, it really doesn't matter.
Their live-act does not lack either, as they perform well blended mix-sets as well as an exquisite Live-PA act. If you've lost faith in trance music, then look no further... these guys are an enduring sound that will not be so easily typecasted or emulated. Let's hope they get the recognition they deserve.
Nathan Fake - The Sky Was Pink - 01-Apr-05 01:04 AM
The James Holden remix...
This has to be the one of the most inventive tunes i've ever heard. While it does remain very subdued and ethereal, the incredibly layered use of FX, the greatly exaggerated dynamics and the swelling harmonic longtones really turn this into track that achieves a new genre in itself. I'm hard-pressed to find anything in my crate theat i could skillfully mix this with, but then again, there's so much that this track has potential to mix with that it's probably just a lack of skill on my part!
A masterful, and truly humbling masterpiece.
Denki Groove - Niji (The MFS Remixes) - 28-Feb-05 01:48 AM
This surprised the hell out of me. Heard this when my friend picked this out of his crate at random.
The variety on this record is great; the Mijk van Dijk remix of of the track somewhere between melodic, old school trance and tribal tech and probably my favorite out of the assorted versions. Something i'd probably spin regardless of it's age. Also, it's great to hear the talent of Mijk van Dijk; who i've remembered for his outstanding work on the Agetec mech-game title "Armored Core".
LOL the title of the next mix always cracks me up. "The Positive Ways Acid Rainbow Remix". While that does sound like horrible cheese for a name, the track itself has some solid elements as a tripped-out funk-house record with a pulsing, synth-drone that dominates the the ear of the listener. Very surprising, in a good way that is.
Next, the "Paul van Dyk Pot of Gold Remix". Very old school here, with evidence of the age of this track in the rather crude drum work. Still solid though, sounds better when spun up-tempo at around 145 bpm. Has PvD's classic ebb and flow though with some great arrangement and FX on the vocals.
Lastly, the Original Mix. While a bit cheesy with the dueting male and female vocals, It still has a great arrangement and structure with a great deal of restraint for the era of trance it came from. Very mature drumwork as well; replacing the classic 4-bar end 4-&-1 break kick with some offbeat pick-up's to the 4/4 kick 2nd and 4th beats. A great track to mix with, it's arrangement perfect for brief or extended transitions.
All in all, the sound of the record really grabbed me with the style of the main melody; very ethereal and uplifting without getting too hard or over-the-top. sounds alot like the style of trance that James Holden is partial too.
It's old though... 1996. Good luck finding the vinyl.
Concord Dawn - 26-Feb-05 08:05 PM
Very original sound in the DnB genre. I've heard everything from atmospheric, ambient stuff to grating, dark industrial. I'm glad they've started to receive some of the recognition that they deserve in the past few years. First time i heard their material was when Bad Company spun "Morning Light" on a mainfloor set with a 150K rig. That buzz-saw bassline shook the venue so hard it blurred your vision.
Personally, i've never heard a release by these guys that i can say i don't like, but if i had to choose a few out of what i have heard, then Shinkansen, Vengeance, Take Me Away, and Morning Light are the best.
"Please don't cry... In the mornin' light..."
Blank & Jones - 26-Feb-05 11:42 AM
LOL I'll agree with you. Blank & Jones, although they seem to enjoy themselves immensely while spinning...almost to much, they really should work on their mixing. Their performance at Trance Energy 2002 was questionable at best... Their mix of their own track "Desire" into "Marc Dawn - Expander (Flutlicht Remix)" was extremely short and sloppy, and sadly gave the formula for their mixing for the rest of the set. I have no problems with their productions whatsoever though, many a Blank & Jones track have I enjoyed and spun.
Blank & Jones, props for your spirit and production. Take some pointers from those who have gone and mixed before you. *cough*DJ Jean*cough*
