DJ Krust* - Soul In Motion - 08-May-04 04:58 PM
In probably his most inventive work to date Krust shows his abstract side with the seminal "Soul In Motion". No sampled breaks here , the beats are crisp and the whole mood is more reminiscent of a electro/techno production than drum'n'bass.

While maintaining a lurking menace feel, this is the diametric opposite of the military hardcore of "Warhead".
Bizarrely though, the track sounds painfully slow at normal speed and has to be pitched up to + 4 before it becomes bearable listening. This is my only gripe about this otherwise excellent record.

Essential for all D'n'B collections, and will certainly be of interest to fans of Drexiya-style electro. Class.

Dream Sequence (4) feat. Blake Baxter - Endless Reflection - 28-Apr-04 12:39 PM
Shockingly low quality record from Blake. Even at the time of release it must have sounded dated. Really average-to-poor tracks which sound like they were knocked out in 15 mins each. The only (novelty) highlight is "Theme Song" which sounds like a Orchestral Manouveres in the Dark B-side from 1983.

If Baxter hadn't been a techno "legend" there's absolutely no chance that Tresor would ever have released this waste of plastic.

Model 500 - Ocean To Ocean - 28-Mar-04 02:43 AM
Often overlooked , this e.p. is a great reminder of what detroit was all about in 1990. The first mix of Ocean to Ocean starts with a great understated 'beatbox' lead in , sweet pads and riffs entering the frame once the kick drum drops. As with so many detroit releases , this hasn't dated mainly due to the fact that it's always sounded ahead of its time.
The B-side has been mis-labeled on this release -'Wanderer' is 'Infoworld' and vice versa.
'Wanderer' (mixed, unmistakably, by Derrick May) is only 120bpm but is so menacingly hard and dark that it's only when you try and mix it in with recent techno releases that you realise how much slower it is.Ownership is compulsory.

Felix Da Housecat - Thee Morning After - 28-Nov-03 05:57 PM
Sometimes the most basic ideas are the best. The "Drumdrum mix" consists of a backwards loop with some sound effects over it. Simple but very effective. Supremely EQ'd and mastered, this cut slices through any other records its mixed with. People hearing this over a big system (or even a little one)stop whatever they're doing and pay attention.
Class.

Underground Resistance - The Fury - 17-Nov-03 05:37 PM
For those of you who only came to UR recently, this will be a bit of a shock. Not the layered ,complex ,emotional music of late, but pure 1992 hardcore.
All the old rave stab and "T99" sounds are in abundance. This a low point in UR quality control and is unrecognisable as a Detroit production. This isn't the first UR attempt at hardcore (check the earlier and superior "Punisher"), but it really is a waste of time.
For completists only.
