Goldmund - Corduroy Road - 20-May-07 02:07 PM
This is an album thats rather hard to review. Corduroy Road is 13 tracks of what might be called modern classical. Piano is the main sound here, but on a couple of tracks we can here an acoustic guitar ever so slightly in the background. As well as an eerie electronic rumble at the end of "Yamase". If you enjoy the classical elements of Helios, then you should grab this one up. Stand outs for me are the unsettling sound in "Downward To Darkness On Extended Wings" and the overwhelming depression found in "Anomolie Loop". An album to be listened to in a quiet setting for sure.

Sync24 - Source - 16-May-07 08:14 AM
First thing is first. There will be an obvious comparision for this album and Carbon Based Lifeforms - World of Sleepers.

Honestly, in my opinion, Source blows W.O.S. right out of the water (now Hydroponic garden is another story). Source is much more quiet and ambient then anything Carbon Based Lifeforms has released. It lacks the acid beats for the most part, and relies on atmosphere much more. The result is quite pleasing and its almost like a Carbon Based Lifeforms Jr. Some people might take offense to that and claim this is a separate outing completely. However, Daniel himself said the album is at least 50% CBL sound.

In either case, its a safe bet if you're a fan of CBL or Ultimae in general, then you'll love this album. Standouts for me are "Memloop" with its hypnotic beat pattern and "mBorg" for its warm IDM sound.

Various - Fahrenheit Project - Part One - 15-May-07 05:14 AM
The first Fahrenheit. I'd say that that the 2 Asura tracks are the standouts here and have a very magical feel to them. I'm not totally sure if Vince was still a part of the act when these tracks were done, but it doesn't matter... They are great! You'll also find a shorter version of Solar Fields' track Outlined Surfaces and an Aes Dana track. The other artists, while I know next to nothing about them, contribute very nicely to the sound and theme of the album, which is more or less downtempo ambient and trance. If you wanna see what the Fahrenheit Projects are about, then part 1 is certainly the place to start.

Solar Fields - Reflective Frequencies - 12-May-07 01:09 PM
The first album by Solar Fields reminds me very much of a soundtrack to some sci-fi PC game from the 90s. Not any in particular one, just the overall sound and mood. This album is a good fusion of downtempo and IDM. He became more ambient with later releases. The obvious influence of space is apparent here with the artwork and track titles (Red Vortex). I'd say I enjoy his later work better but this is a very worthy humble beginning. Tracks like Blue Light and Inherit Velocity really get me in the mood to watch a sci-fi movie with their deep, space-like rhythm. As one of Ultimae's first releases, this one is getting harder to find.

Ultimae Records - 06-May-07 03:07 PM
Ultimae Records music is pretty much unlike anything else out there. Acts like Solar Fields, Carbon Based Lifeforms and Aes Dana are clearly in a league of their own when it comes creating downtempo chill music. Space, technology and nature all seem to co-exist in their sound and there hasn't been a release on the label that has ever let me down. They always go with a digipak when releasing their music, which normally I hate, but with such beautiful and interesting artwork... I guess I can't complain. I hope these guys are around for a very, very long time.
