Robert Henke - Piercing Music - 01-May-09 08:29 AM
Good heavens! This is a wonderful example of very minimal ambient music. Its very close in form and style to the wonderful Monolake ep Gobi - the desert. As you would expect for a Henke record, its lovingly and expertly produced. Bears comparison also with some of Rod Modells work on Silentes. If you like your tunes minimal and ambient without being dark or nasty or weird, grab a copy of the excellent CD while you can.

Jon Hopkins - Opalescent - 01-May-09 08:23 AM
Hmm

Heard alot of good stuff about this CD, there are glowing reviews on amazon. Ultimately I found it pretty disappointing. Jon Hopkins, I read, went to the Royal Academy of Music but if he learned anything really interesting there, i dont think it shows on this CD. Yes, its all compentently written chill-out-electronic-ambient tunage. Yes, its all very unthreatening and, if it hasnt been already, you will probably hear tunes from it used as backing music for some documentary or advert or something. But really, its not that interesting. It reminded me of 1990s ambient-dub with better production and less excitement. Frankly IMO you are better off getting some original 1990s ambient-dub such as The Higher Intelligence Agency, Sounds from the Ground, Adham Shaikh

Swayzak / Various - Avantgarde // Swayzak Presents Serieculture - 01-May-09 08:12 AM
So, this is the most expensive CD I have ever bought... mostly because the first guy I paid (too much) for a copy for was rip-off artist and never sent the CD. So I had to order another not-exactly-cheap copy...

I have a chequered history with Swayzak CDs (Snowboarding... classic and essential, get it today! ; Bergerie... most disappointing Cd I have ever bought - see my reviews of these CDs for more) so I knew I was gambling when I ordered another copy... well...

Its damn good! (phew!)

CD1 has lots of the techy-dubby tunes with strange high end sounds (herein, a japanese flute over crackling tech house, for example) that makes Snowboarding... such a classic album. Why on earth Swayzak held off releasing these tunes until they put out this CD I dont know. Subway travel, the 4th half-hour-long tune seems to be four farly similar mixes of the same tune arranged end-to-end and, as such, is probably the weaker part of the CD but really, its all good and the other outstanding tracks make this kind of essential listening

CD2 features a very interesting mixes (essentially 3 themed mixes back to back) from a techno-electronic-glitch-electro mould. None of these mixes are exactly straight-forward club material : they are a little more abstract than the tunes on the first CD and a deal more varied in style.

Masters At Work - The Tenth Anniversary Collection - Part Two (1996 - 2000) - 01-May-09 08:00 AM
Hmmm well after getting the box set part one (which is fantastic and comes with a pretty high recommendation to anyone into really any kind of house music) I was looking forward to part two... it is something of a disappointment. Alot of the tunes seem rather tepid to me. Yes, its all nicely produced and there are some classics on here (though Id be surprised if you havent got them on other CDs already) but, well, it sounds to me like the MAW boys got a bit bored in the late 90s and lost their funk. Possibly this is bacause so many of the tunes on here are remixed by... and engineered by... rather than being written/poduced by them. Anyway, but the Part One Collection but this one seems like its for completists only

Beat Pharmacy - Wikkid Times - 07-Apr-09 07:56 AM
Oh dear. This was a terrible disappointment to me as I am rather keen on the earlier Beat Pharmacy CDs. Where, IMO, this one goes wrong, is that almost all the tracks feature vocals and the vocal treatments mask what sound like rather exciting music and production in what has become the background. On earlier works, Mr Moeller managed to strike a perfect balance between vocal-free tunes and some nice lyrical work. In effect this CD end up making Moeller sound like a follower rather than a leader. I really hope a dub version without the vocals is released, though I fear thats rather unlikely. Never mind... his earlier albums are thoroughly worthwhile, check them out instead.
