Black Dog, The - Liber Dogma Dec 19, 2011 (edited 5 months ago)
Agreed, Hype Knot 7 is a highlight, but I think this is a case of being greater than the sum of its parts - it makes more sense and is more enjoyable listened to in its entirety, which was probably the intention, with each track mixing into the next. I read that they wanted to replicate one of their live shows in an album format and I think it works. I think TBD have been quite varied in their styles and approach in this current line-up, and delivered some great music. These last four albums have each been different and have all been great. There is a more stripped down approach here and you can hear the influence of darker techno and industrial (Sheffield anyone?) Not everyone's cup of tea and its different to classic TBD, but that's good! Personally, I think Plaid are long past their best and I found the recnt Scintilli LP disappointing. Each to their own.
Depends. Did you actually press 'Play'?

Superb tune
John Heckle - The Second Son Aug 29, 2011 (edited 9 months ago)
John Heckle delivers a truly incredible album with 'The Second Son', a release which vividly marks him out as a true and distinctive talent in what can (at times) seem an increasingly bland and unoriginal musical form.

The ten tracks presented here come across as some sort of missing link in Chicago House history - what might have happened if the frenetic pace of developments of the late 80s and early 90s had been somewhat tempered and the considerable creative juices of the day had been allowed to swash around more freely. But that, as far as I am concerned, is what Jamal Moss's Mathematics Recordings was willed into existence for, to build upon that era's sounds, ideas, feelings, philosophy and approach, and in this artist and in this album I feel this mission has reached a milestone.

John takes those familiar feelings of classic early house and gives them his own kinda soul and energy. It all sounds familiar and brand spanking new at the same time, like you're rediscovering the intense joys of this music all over again. There is a naturalness to John's production and musicality that struck me as something like eternal Larry Heard meets classic Derrick May, served up through a Hieroglyphic Being style gritty aesthetic. And yet, his sound is very much his own distinct brand.

Whatever's going on here, this release puts a huge smile on my face and stirs something that first got stirred in me more than 17 years ago - so thanks for that Mr Heckle!!
Dynamik Bass System - The Mighty Machine Dec 19, 2009 (edited over 2 years ago)
Totally brilliant, infectious album. I could end there - but I'll go on. What we have here is a bodyrockin, electrofied, funk-infused, mighty selection of party beats. I could end there too - but...

I love this album, but almost passed it by on first listen via short clips on an internet record shop (see this is the problem with online record buying - SAVE THE VINYL!! by the way). Somehow, I revisited this record and have not regretted it. I don't exactly come from an electro background, but Dynamik Bass System serve up a great offering of perfectly balanced tracks that could/should please discerning tastes from many ends of the electronica spectrum - no shit! It's tough enough, funky enough and catchy enough to ensure a wide audience without compromising its quality and unashamed tip-of-the-hat to Miami Bass and assorted electro influences.

It could be the vodka typing here - but I've since moved on to whiskey! No really - do yourself a favour and check this out - 21st century old skool electro beats par excellence. Play the muthaf***er loud! I think.
Forget the usual negative comments about who is behind what and why and just appreciate what is a hugely satisfying double pack of well produced techno.

Most of the appreciation I have seen has been for the second disc tracks, and yes these are excellent. However, do not overlook Motor City Matrix on the first disc - especially the original mix - pure detroit funk that begs to be played loud.

Overall, it is clear that much love and attention has gone into the execution of this release, but if that doesn't win you over and you are a particularly shallow individual, the lovely white vinyl and general presentation should win you over.

I am looking forward to a follow up release.
