Sick of New Age labels and artists passing them off as being ambient.

Reviews:

Hypnos - 04-Feb-04 04:29 AM
This label seems to try to convince people that they are a ambient label, when in reality they are another New Age Hearts of Space.
Many artists on this label are in fact New Age artists. Arguments against this are that stores/distributors are the reason why most of these artists are placed in the New Age section (to try to move more product perhaps??). I tend to agree with this to a certain extent, but in the case with Hypnos I feel that this is not the case.
They have a good selection of music to offer and by all means I salute and respect their work. But New Age / ambient is a fine line that seems to be crossed constantly with this label, and mostly ends up on the New Age side.
One of their greatest releases, and now I hear it is out of print, is a collaboration with former Silent Records artists Rod Modell and Michael Mantra.

Plastikman - Closer - 03-Feb-04 04:51 AM
You have to be joking. This is the poorest excuse for an album ever conceived by an electronic artist. I listened to this album at a record store in London and everyone was just laughing of how horrible the release was. I thought it cant be that bad, so I borrowed my mates promo for a week to listen "closer" to it.
Highly disappointing and I wonder when Richie will put out a record of himself farting to a 909. Funny thing, it would sell and people will think its great. "His farts are so evolving and minimal...Priceless."
If anything will offer a glimpse of hope for Plastikman, it would be retirement. But unfortunately Richie has not retired and hopefully he will record something of substance, and not leave on a downer.
If you do buy this album, buy it used as the last few songs at the end maybe worth the purchase for under 3 quid.

Imax - DC Trax - 02-Feb-04 05:03 PM
After first hearing OCTAL02, which I liked due to its nice TB303 content, I was disappointed to find out that this release was just another minimal techno record trying to sound like Basic Channel.
The best track on this is 5AM, which is a nice beatless ambient track that makes this record worth buying. Otherwise, it's a second rate Basic Channel rip off.

CV - Movement - 02-Feb-04 04:51 PM
Limited to 666 copies. Fine use of Tb 303 on these tracks and according the label web site (as of 1-03-04), more 303's will be used in the future and the minimal techno sound abandoned completely.
The Version mix is the most appealing as it hypnotically changes over the course of its duration.
This is last minimal record apparently on this label.
