DJ Guy (2) - Incendiary EP - 03-Oct-08 06:19 AM
A1 has all you will ever need: a perfect verse/hook-structured rap about getting stupid at the party, an immense bassline that sounds like it was inspired by the soundtrack to the old Godzilla movie and crystal clear production values that will tear up the floor, especially on a proper sound system. As if that wasn't enough, you get an additional four thumping ghetto tech rollers that will satisfy any bass-hungry crowd nicely. What more could you possibly ask for?

Brandy (2) - What About Us? - 14-Feb-08 02:42 PM
As UK Garage/2step was enjoying its biggest success and milking rnb diva-crooning for all it was worth, US star producer Rodney Jerkins aka Darkchild decided to do something completely different. The result: an offkilter, shuffling and gritty beat which predated the broken beat/hiphop hybrid you can hear from the likes of Flying Lotus and Rustie by approximately 5 years. Combined with Brandy's pissed off lyrics that for once break with her back catalogue of cloying ballads, this tune is a winner.

It's tunes like this that make the relentless aural torture of mainstream/chart music television a bit more bearable.

DJ Maxximus - Bass The World - 23-Jan-08 12:24 PM
Bass The World sees DJ Maxximus bringing a selection of chest-rattling grime and sublow to the table, but is ultimately let down by some of the worst mixing I've ever heard on a CD. Simple crossfader throws and awkward offbeat fadeouts kill the momentum whenever you feel that things are really getting going, and they continue to do so throughout the duration of the mix. It really is a shame, as it ruins what would otherwise be a superb snapshot of some of the things UK Garage had to offer behind the glitz and bling of the commercial 2step-era. Not to mention that it kicks your subwoofers like a mule.

Cassetteboy - Dead Horse - 15-Feb-07 07:59 PM
More pause/record gold from the Chelmsford tape wreckers on this one. Highlights:

* Mike Skinner from The Streets talking about how incredibly shit he is and how he should be shot

* Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear talking about his vastly undersized member and how he loves the sound of Robert Mugabe

* More perverted Harry Potter that'll make baby jesus cry

* Newsreporter with an exclusive report on Princess Diana's sex tape, involving "the archbishop of Canterbury and a fairy"

* Bill Cosby encouraging the children to sing along cheerfully about taking drugs and selling drugs to him

That's only a fraction of what you'll find here. Still, I'd like to see Cassetteboy making some more cut- and-paste music to mix things up. With their knack for using leftover samples, the results should be rather interesting. And come on, "US, the evil terrorist nation" and similar rhetoric got old ages ago.

Kemal And Rob Data* - Gene Sequence / Portal - 26-Dec-06 05:29 AM
Gene Sequence is a tune I keep coming back to. Unbelievably tight drum programming makes for a superb roller that can save any drum n bass DJ's day, yet with enough subtle twists and turns at every corner to keep the proceedings varied and interesting throughout. It's a shame that Rob and Kemal aren't as prolific as they used to be, as their meticulous sense of detail is sorely needed in drum n bass these days.
