Steer well clear of the original version, an absolutely horrendous exercise in the biggest cliches that italo disco and synth pop have to offer. The Aeroplane remix doesnt help the matter much, offering simply a somewhat faster and italo disco-tinged rendition of the original. A-Traks remix doesnt fare much better either. While it does beef the original up considerably, it still retains those awful Eurovision-style vocals, and the bassline sounds like it was nicked straight from Thomas Bangalters harddrive.
Thus, its Gerald Donalds job to save this release. And boy, does he ever! The Arpanet remix offers a very satisfying slice of stripped down and sleazed-out electro bliss, complete with those eerie Arpanet/Dopplereffekt-synths, a rumbling bassline and some of the better sampling of female moans on a record that Ive heard for quite some time. Perhaps not the most original thing Donald has ever done, but when executed this well, I really couldnt care less. And neither should you.

"Carl Cox and friends! Yes!"
What the fuck is this? Sounds like someone threw Nôze into a local pub in Shropshire and left them there with Oktoberfest-sized beer kegs for a week. The end result is a rather absurd mix of jolly acoustic guitar ditties, 808s that sound like theyve been pasted on with a glue stick and cheerful sing-a-longs about your favourite dj heroes or personal grooming. Bloody marvellous. File under "how to confuse your scenester/trainspotter friends".
Zero T* Feat Steo / Calibre - Refusal (Calibre Remix) / Be There - 30-Jan-09 01:57 PM
Calibres ultra-smooth and streamlined approach to drum n bass often ends up sounding very uneventful and dull to these ears. However, it also often hits the spot 100%, giving the track just the right amount of smoothness that it needs to complement the elements used perfectly. This remix of Refusal is a perfect example of this. Its wonderfully sparse piano chords are placed perfectly to offset Steos subtle vocals and the shuffling groove.
On the flip, Be There with DRS doesnt stand out as much, but still offers a nice and easy roller for the mellower moments.
DJ Guy (2) - Incendiary EP - 03-Oct-08 06:19 AM
A1 has all you will ever need: a perfect verse/hook-structured rap about getting stupid at the party, an immense bassline that sounds like it was inspired by the soundtrack to the old Godzilla movie and crystal clear production values that will tear up the floor, especially on a proper sound system. As if that wasnt enough, you get an additional four thumping ghetto tech rollers that will satisfy any bass-hungry crowd nicely. What more could you possibly ask for?
Brandy (2) - What About Us? - 14-Feb-08 02:42 PM
As UK Garage/2step was enjoying its biggest success and milking rnb diva-crooning for all it was worth, US star producer Rodney Jerkins aka Darkchild decided to do something completely different. The result: an offkilter, shuffling and gritty beat which predated the broken beat/hiphop hybrid you can hear from the likes of Flying Lotus and Rustie by approximately 5 years. Combined with Brandys pissed off lyrics that for once break with her back catalogue of cloying ballads, this tune is a winner.
Its tunes like this that make the relentless aural torture of mainstream/chart music television a bit more bearable.
