John Ylvisaker - Cool Livin' - 11-Sep-08 03:09 AM
The original ' Cool Livin' ' LP was released with a different sleeve on Avant Garde label in 1967. This release on Mystic features a mix of tracks taken from the name giving LP (tracks on side one) and also its follower ' A Love Song ' from 1968 (tracks on side two). So this 'compilation' does not seem to be offical. In spite of everything this is a nice opportunity to get a general idea of this interesting Xian Folk/Psych artist.
Sensational Alex Harvey Band, The - Tomorrow Belongs To Me - 14-Nov-06 01:37 AM
The first releases of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band are a pick ‚n’ mix of Rock & Roll, Blues and Chanson, fine but somehow traditionell albums. „Tomorrow Belongs To Me“ paints a different picture. It is richer, stronger and more glamorous than everything they did before. And its no exaggeration to say, that Alex Harvey, the scottish underdog is mutating into a real „working class glam- king“ here. His way of singing always was totally unique, but on this record, he was really on top of his art. To call it eccentric would be a real understatement, that’s for sure. The lyrics on this record might be funny and cryptic as usual but the intense use of keyboard arrangements give a more flamboyant and glamorous touch to the songs, which is good. Though this music does not represent the „luxurious“ and arty perspective of David Bowie, Steve Harley or Roxy Music, it's one of the finest glam albums of the 70's in my opinion. And definitely my favourite of this nowadays nearly forgotten band.
Jean-Michel Jarre - Zoolook - 21-Dec-05 02:09 PM
It's quite interesting to see Jean-Michel Jarre's development from the kitschy debut "Oxygene", over his much better following LP "Equinoxe", to this one. In fact, Zoolook doesn't make you think of a Jarre release at all ! Especially side two offers pearls somewhere between Art Of Noise, Herbie Hancock or something produced by Bill Laswell of Material. Funky and surprising music this was in 1984....... and it still is today. Don't let the name on the cover fool you, this record is worth to be discovered!
Hafler Trio, The - Cleave: 9 Great Openings - 12-May-05 10:21 PM
This a magical piece of art. Fragile and set. Threatening and beautiful at the same time. More than one hour - one track. One hour with basically the same "drone" tone with slight variations and additions. Like elements of a composition by Schönberg that never end. I know, this might sound scarifying, but believe me, it isn´t. Because time seems to be absent while you`re listening. And nothing, absolutely nothing seems to be important anymore. Everything is absorbed.
You can call it a meditation, you can call it a trip. I don`t know. All I know is, that this is essential.
Aphex Twin - Drukqs - 12-Apr-05 02:56 PM
How far can too far go ? The people of Warp Records were probably thinking of this advertising slogan from "From Dusk Till Dawn" when they released this. And this avenue led to the goal. But in my opinion, this whole thing is an absurdity from start to finish: The size of the box comparing to the content. The amount of records. Yes, AND the music. I know, there are people here, who think this is RDJ`s masterpiece, but I can`t follow them. Except three or four tracks , this-for me-is just a compilation of left-overs wrapped in a huge package to make it extraordinary and to place it as an collectors item.
