Various - The Universe Compilation: Sounds Of The World's Most Progressive Dance Party Organization - 02-Sep-09 06:38 PM
When I first received this CD from an opinionated mail order record shop in NJ, 1993, I was seriously dissapointed and depressed with what I found on this. I was expecting helium chipmonks, breakbeats, and crazy sounds which is what I wanted to hear.

Instead what I heard was dark moody soundscapes that wouldn't sound out of place in the Bladerunner, The Lawnmower Man, or the Logans Run movie. I did not like this.

Fast foward to a time when I have 10% of the chipmonk breakbeat music and I've heard about 50% of it, I can now enjoy other types of music. Especially music from 1992. I don't care what the style of dance music is, if its from the early 90s its golden by default. This brings me to this Cd compilation. This is some of the finest trance music I have ever had the pleasure of hearing with my ears. This is not like the BS wuss trance that would dominate later. As I stated this stuff is dark, moody and above all well constructed and with much thought.

Two Thumbs "Virtual Reality" is truly a masterpeice! Listening to it makes you feel as though your on a futuristic space station filled with Hr Gigger aliens or perhaps in some sort of Lawnmower Man low-rez polygon world. I'm sure the track title leads my mind to wonder into such a place. This is unlike any thing I've ever heard and have ever heard since.

Resistance D "Cosmic Love (Approach & Identify)" is such a good track that the idea was later ripped off (sampling Logans Run) for a Basement Records track. This is about as hard as this CD gets and its as ruff as one can get without dropping an amen breakbeat in the mix.

Dave Angel "1st Symphony" is quite possibly the most soothing and calming house tracks I've ever heard and it fits in perfectly as the second to last track here, the last being a beatless ambient dreamscape.

The CD claims to be computer mixed yet its not mixed at all, its sequenced in a way that flows very nicely except for one moment. At a certain point the volume is so loud you'll have to reach for the volume to turn the sound down.

If you ever see this CD at FYE for 5 dollars your a fool for not grabbing it. Even at the full price I paid for it back in 1993 when it first came out it was a wise decision even if it took me 10+ years to realize it.

Tin Tin (3) - Volume 1 - 28-Jun-09 05:17 PM
Its a hard pill to swallow that this was from 1995! This has 1993 Basement Records written all over it! The main but on the logo side is a smooth rolling 4/4 jungletekno Alex Reese/Jack Smooth-styled affair with standard Basement Records keyboard riffs and lush sexy strings. This one is the cut to play for sure, quite ruff and euphoric at the same time. Side AA2 is another wicked Basement Records style track which is very simmilar to M-Power. It has crazy breakbeats and a sick keyboard riff. Side AA1 is actually a house track thats just blah.

Pressure Rise - She's In Your Mind - 11-Jun-09 07:50 PM
When this came out I was completely blown away, floored, and drooling at the mouth. New DNB with a proper 1992 vibe!!! I was eating this up and thus began my NEW drum and bass record buying binge. All because of this Cause 4 Concern remix!

Its all about that pitched down amen with those Outlander "The Vamp" keys which appear in raw and filtered form in this track. The track has really rough sounds but its layed out in a manner that is smooth and chill. Its a great tune and there was no better one to get me to ride the 1992+DNB phase which lasted from this record till sometime in 2003.

Thank you Cause 4 Concern!

Edge Of Darkness - Tremor / Oasis / Heaven - 03-Jun-09 08:55 PM
This record gets a "5" for the track titled "Heaven" alone. Heaven is one of the happiest tracks I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. It ranks right up there with Harmony & Extreme's "Music" as well as DJ Seduction's "Hardcore Heaven".

Starts out with a solid 4/4 beat, then dropping into a chipmonk chorus singing "Yeah yeah yeah", then the 4/4 beat drops with breaks on top building into a sick hands in the air 'ardkore riff complete with crowd noise in the background. This then busts into a breakbeat section while changing cord patterns along side cliche "Whoo whoo whoo" vocals.

A phat tune indeed! Thanks to Grooverider for introducting me to this gem via that Live At The Edge mix he did.

The only downside is the track could have been produced to sound crisper and it should have been the "A" side. The track that is on the "A" side isn't all that great.

DJ Crystl - Meditation (Remix) - 15-Apr-09 08:42 PM
The track is a good atmospheric amen roller but not on this pressing. If you want to enjoy this track, get the full release with the excellent Warp Drive remix on the flip.

This particular one sided promo record was pressed way off center. Infact its the most off center pressing I have in my collection. So much so that I made it into my very own DeeJay Records wall clock using a clock kit at the local Michael's arts and crafts store. Its the best wall clock ever and an excellent conversation peice!
