Laurent Garnier - X-Mix-2 - Destination Planet Dream - 23-Oct-07 08:17 PM
I bought this on a whim at a now defunct record store in New Brunswick, NJ in 1994. I was already quite a fan of lighting at night clubs and since video was in a way part of that, I felt I owed it to myself to buy a rave graphics VHS tape. Well on first impression I wasn't blown away by this tape. It was actually too advanced from what I was expecting. I wanted to see flashing fractiles and poorly rendered 3D objects. Most of the graphics on this tape were smooth and crisp looking, far too advanced for the gritty dance music that I enjoyed at the time.
It wasn't until I saw this tape played _many times_ at the rave club, "The Frieght Yard" in Allentown, PA that I started to like it. They played it so many times I'm surprised the tape didn't snap! This tape is kind of like a mediocure song you hear on the radio. You hear it so many times that you end up loving it. Well that was my impression of this tape. The one graphic that stayed with me is actually the first one, the red bending lines. I feel that is the most appealing sequence on the whole tape.
I've since bought the DVD compilations of X-Mix so I'll be able to enjoy this again since I no longer own a VHS player.
Martha Wash - Runaround - 18-Feb-07 01:30 PM
Todd Terry's "Master Dub" is the one for me. Thick & chunky UK 'Ardkore-like stabs carry out this tune which play in various melodies. To accompany this you have retriggered Martha Wash vocal samples arranged in a way that sounds like nonsense which is great. The 909 beats, as simple as they are have a real gritty overdriven feel which makes the track sound even more 'ardkore. On the flip my second choice is "Tee's Dub to Dub" which has some elements from "Master Dub" only with a really nice chill bit in the middle which is the sonic equivalent to a nice summer breeze. This is certainly one of Todd Terrys better moments, not that he ever had a dull moment in the early 90s / late 80s anyway.
Suburban Knight - Digital Warriors (Episode I) - 17-Dec-06 08:03 AM
This is a nice EP and it shows that Suburban Knight never lost his hardcore. Both Tiny Toys and Oracle sound like they were made in 1992 which is the reason I bought this. Tiny Toys features a high pitched happy riff and a nice sexy little breakdown. Oracle is a full on breakbeat assault which reminds me of Trigger "Stratosphere". Unfortunatly Oracle takes far too long to get to the beats and by the time the beats start, the track is more then half over. Still a nice EP and its always heart warming when an artist who made nice tracks back in the day, still continues to do so in the same style. Hey if its not broken why fix it?
Various - 3 Minute Blunts Vol. 1 - 13-Dec-06 06:30 PM
Hip Hop the way it was ment to be heard. Without rappers to spoil the beats! Unfortunatly many tracks go over 3 minutes and yet the title of the compilation promised me otherwise. Track 6: Papa Willie "Whodunnit" is a favorite of mine. It sounds quite retro with its high pitched bell riff and the sick break beats backed with thick sub bass. It would probably sound even better sped up to +14 with house style 909 beats for some proper jungle tekno action. All in all not a bad compilation, even if all you plan to do with it is sample the breaks which are often left wide open. Better still this CD was given away for free at record stores. One can't do better then free.
Takaaki Itoh - You Found Out It Goes Back To Endless Reality EP - 27-Sep-06 10:50 AM
Ever since I discovered dark hard techno through an old friend I've really taken to liking Takaaki Itoh's works. Previous Itoh records I've come across are really dark and angry however this one is much more on the lighter tip. Dare I say, this one is almost 'ardkore which is much more my speed. The stand out track here is blatantly "I Did No Wrong" and believe me, he certainly didn't! This track reminds me of the sort of smooth atmospheric 1992/3 jungle tekno that LTJ Bukem became famous for. Instead of using amens and other breakbeats, Mr. Itoh uses his own brand of crunchy drums, arranged to sound like a break beat. The cord progression and mood is just completely identical to 1993 jungle track. I didn't even know this track was like this till I received it in the mail, It blew my mind! Another good stand out track is "Pointless Life" which is a very nice filler tune that uses the beat from the Killing All Anarchists EP. A nice track with a fierce driving beat although it wouldn't have hurt if it had a hook or melody. "Clean your shyness" is standard Itoh style darkness while "Face life as it is remix" is actually a nice chilled out track. For me its all about "I did no wrong" and I hope to hear more 1992 style hard techno tracks in the future as I live for this kind of stuff.
