Starshooter - 01-Jun-09 02:44 PM
In France, during the late seventies, disco music and popular french singers ruled the airwaves : it was a challenge for french rock bands to get an audience (even using their native language) ; only three french singing rock bands have succeed in the conquest of a national audience : Telephone, Trust and to a less extent, Starshooter.

Starshooter had started has a punk band in Lyon under the name "Scooters". They signed with an international major company in 1977, exceptional point for a french rock band. The first album was welcomed by radio stations (they were only 4 large band frequencies stations at this time, FM stations didnt exists yet). Theirs pop songs were powerful and catchy, and gave an impression of optimism on the first three albums. The fourth album with CBS was produced in the UK by an english producer on the idea to reach fans beyond french speaking community, have brought a darker vision of the world. But the public stilled always at a low level for the gigs, and after 4 LPs, Starshooter disbanded in 1982, tired of the bad recognition in their own country.

The leader and song writer, Kent Hutchinson (also named Kent Cokenstock) went on with a solo career as French songs singer and comics drawer.

Jean Bruce - YVY - 06-May-09 05:31 AM
Do you remember the time when snare beats were banging ? Do you miss the harshness of analog synths ?
Come right here !
If you do like real synths sounds, this record is for you : full analog should be sticked on it, 100 % VST free !
"Yvy" is a new beat minimal structured track that rocks da house. The Da Fresh edit sounds a bit more ambient.
The B side track "Terminal" develops a kind of minimal dub trance with hard synth passages.
Nice work Mr Jean Bruce !

Hunters & Collectors - Ghost Nation - 17-Mar-09 04:48 AM
Not only the rivers have ran dry, the bands inspiration too. "You stole my thunder" sings Mark Seymour, its true, the thunder as gone far away. What is left, the wonderful Mark Seymours voice, but where is madness, tribalism, movie tracks atmospheres, creativity ? There is only a ghost rock band, with professional songs, but no surprises, everything is conventional, made on the aim to reach a large audience, and the result is a poor Midnight Oil copy. "Ghost Nation" is not enough to save the entire album.

Hunters & Collectors - 13-Mar-09 01:22 PM
This band is probably the most unknown australian band in Europa, such a pity. Even so, their first 3 LPs were pure wonders, this guys have created their own sound, a mix between Killing Joke, Can and Captain Beefheart. They played a powerfull australian rock with very specific atmospheres, kinds of movies tracks : the music often rise on hypnotic rythms and a tortured soul come, invocated by the great shaman Mark Seymour.

Much more than Midnight Oil, they do incarnate a root vision of Australia, full of sand, dust, trucks, "tremors" or "razorbacks" and natives spirit ; if Birthday Party could be the dark side of the city, Hunters & Collectors are the dark side of the outback. AC/DC is often called kangaroo rock, there, this is about ornithorynchus rock.

Portion Control - The Great Divide - 09-Dec-08 11:13 AM
Came out in 1985, this track is the bands most famous hit. With it, the band began to pass beyond the underground limits to reach a larger audience. Despite a "more poppy" approach, Portion Control basics stills : John Wybrews unique agressive and powerfull voice, Simmonds electronic beat, and irresistible danceable synth bass rythmics.

At the time, it had a good rotation on underground radio stations and was "clipped" too.

Forget the 12 version, this is the original one, the only one. If cant find a vinyle version, you can find it on the "archive" 5 CD compilation.
