Shapeshifter - Reticulum Flux - 19-Jan-06 12:45 AM
A darn great album in my opinion. Fans of scary ambient and noisey IDM will do well to check this CD out. Most of the tracks use similar noise techniques that one could find on Autechres "Chiastic Slide" album. While other tracks are dominated by eerie ambience. Shapeshifter blends the two styles together perfectly and this is one of my favorite background music CDs now. I guess you could imagine being alone in a huge factory during the middle of the night while trying to hide from aliens... that might be a good visual picture of what the mood for Reticulum Flux is like.
Atrium Carceri - Seishinbyouin - 16-Jan-06 01:04 AM
Atrium Carceris 2nd album only expands on what made Cellblock such an experience. Seishinbyouins theme is a rusty old asylum. Like ATs previous album, this album sets the mood and atmosphere as to what it would be like to actually be there. This time around there is 14 tracks which adds about an extra 10 to 15 minutes on ambient goodness. This album uses a lot of japanese samples that are clouded in the backgrounds of the tracks. Im not sure if they are from movies or anime, but they add to the scary intensity of the album because its almost as if youre locked in an asylum room yourself with people outside communicating in a lanquage you dont understand. If you enjoyed Cellblock, youre in for a real treat with this follow-up.
Atrium Carceri - Cellblock - 16-Jan-06 01:02 AM
Atrium Carceri is my favorite when it comes to dark ambient. His first album, Cellblock, is a haunted trip through an old broken down, abandoned prison. These 12 tracks recreate the type of mood and setting youd be in if you just so happen as to be in this nightmarish building. There are no real standout tracks in my opinion, all form and function as one piece. You cant really just listen to select tracks as you wont be getting the entire experience that was meant to be heard. While this album does use a lot of creepy sounds and backdrops - there is also a piano present at times to add on the ambience. Very reccomended if you enjoy dark, scary ambience.
Mr Projectile* - Sinking Sampler - 10-Jan-06 04:12 AM
This was my first introduction to Mr. Projectile. I heard some of his samples on Mercks site and decided to order his the Sinking vinyl, which by the way, is a sampler for his newest album on Merck. I was pretty much blown away with these 5 tracks. Its IDM, but different then any youve ever heard before. He does a fantastic job at creating a melody to flow throughout the whole track that will sometimes fade away but come back later in the song. He also uses some female vocals on some of these tracks. A very nice touch and adds even more beauty to the music. I reccommend Mr. Projectile if youre a fan of IDM.
Loess - 3D Concepts Part 2 - 30-Dec-05 03:07 PM
Loess fans are in for a real treat with this vinyl. The A-side has 3 crunchy-IDM tracks with hints of ambience running through them. However, side-b is the real winner here. The 2 tracks on the bside are long, stretched out creepy ambience that in my opinion is some of Loess best work. I liked this vinyl so much that I plan on getting the CD split version as well so I can listen to these tunes in my car.
