Blake Baxter - EP
Apr 15, 2004
Don't listen to some of the above comments, this record is a stone cold classic that is essential for any self-respecting techno fan. "Sexuality" has got to be one of the most banging party tracks ever, complete with trademark sleazy vocals from Blake and a nasty acid groove that will devistate everything in a 10 mile radius. Listen to this on a big system! Absolutely classic techno!
Gary Low - La Colegiala / Equador
Apr 14, 2004
Whoever gave this record a low rating has never properly listened to the last half of 'La Colegiala' and the flipside 'Ecuador'. The former breaks down to a absolutely smoking beatbox-like solo with a jackin raw house beat underneath, while the latter is a dreamy baleric masterpeice with excellent synth arrangements and an amazing latin guitar solo at the end. Killer record! It is unfortunate that more people don't know about Lil' Louis beyond his groundbreaking release "French Kiss", cause he was responsible for some hot underground cuts on Ray Barney's Dance Mania that are still classics to this day! This release is no excpetion, and is one of my favourite Lil' Louis productions. "Wargames" is a wigged out minimal house track that will please techno fans with its tough beats, however it is "Seven Days of Peace" that is the real gem here. The track is an old school vocal cut with the most amazing melody underneath which Louis keeps on adding sounds to throughout its duration... the track is made all the more better, by the roughness that his production gear gives to it - a wicked track that every fan fan of Chicago house should own!
Laurent X - Machines
Oct 22, 2003
What a record!! Laurent X's "Machines" is one of the real gems to come out of Chicago, a frequently overlooked acid house masterpiece which has more than a passing resemblance to alot of the early nineties 'bleep' techno/house which it influenced. Mark Imperial (and Vinny Devine) should really get more credit for innovating the Chicago sound through some great releases such "J'Adore Danser", "The Love I Lost", and The Children's "Freedom". With "Machines" they have created one of the most memorable acid lines ever - a really wild warehouse track underpinned by tough beats, and some great robot-like vox. "12am and "Drowning in a Sea of House" are great slices of old school deep house, but it is the title cut that will devastate. Do not be without it!
52nd Street - Can't Afford
Oct 16, 2003
When I first heard the 'Unorganized Mix' of this track on an old Ron Hardy @ The Music Box mix, I realised how little I knew about the enormous amount of great records made in the 1980s. This is a forgotten gem that deserves to be up there with other records of its ilk such as Kurtis Blow's "The Breaks" and Rockers Revenge's "Sunshine Partytime". What sets this track apart from the last two though, is its more house-like structure. The beats and bassline are dark and heavy and are complented perfectly by deep-voiced rapping over the top, telling a story about a guy confronting and beating up a bunch of thugs who try to rob him - very cool! Later rereleased on the Profile label, this a dark, pumpin' party track that should not be overlooked.
D.J. Funk #1* - The Original Video Clash
Oct 16, 2003
Before the birth of his own imprint Funk Records, DJ Funk was releasing some of his most classic and sought after material on Dance Mania. DJ Funk has always been one of the more inventive Chicago booty trax producers evidenced by the nuber of times his samples resurface in the productions of others, and this release only furthers that reputation. Half of this record is dedicated to sped up remixes of the Lil' Louis classic "Video Clash", with Funk phattening up the bass and percussion, however while the A-Side, "Acid Frequency" and "Jerk It" are dancefloor bombs, it is "Bitches" that makes this record an instant classic. This cut features a filtered dirty groove and pumpin' Chi-style percussion, with Funk delivering a nasty, rapid fire rap over the top about his various women - very very funny! "Bitches" is easily one of his bests works and fits well in any kind of house/techno set, a out and out classic!
DJ HMC - Phreakin'
Oct 16, 2003
Combine one part Brandon Cooke feat. Roxanne Shante's "Sharp As A Knife", with one part Zapp "It Doesn't Really Matter" and what do you get? The track that put Australian underground dance music on the map! "Phreakin" was a HUGE track both in Australia and internationally, not only providing an inroad for other Australian artists but also cementing HMC's more than ten year dominance as one of the leading forces in Australia's techno scene. HMC, like on previous releases (e.g. Dirty Acid Trax) gives a nod to the old school (Chicago, Detroit, New York) through his clever use of sounds and samples, taking the above tracks and creating a punishing funky-as-hell party techno anthem, that will forever go down as a classic. HMC we salute you!
Jammin' The House Gerald* - Factory Style
Oct 15, 2003
This is one of Dance Mania's best releases, with at least four straight up party rockin booty trax. The catchy "Get The Hoe '94" samples the piano line from Rhythm Is Rhythm's "Strings Of Life", while Gerald samples Jackmaster Dick's "Sensuous Woman..." on Trax Records for "Black Women". However it is "Hit Tracks" - featuring the oft-sampled 'Hit It From The Back' line, "Mutha____Party Hype", and "Posse Up" which are the real bombs here. These three tracks are raw booty tracks with great percussion and rapid fire lyrics that will blow up any floor. This is a very overlooked release from an underrated Chicago producer who has gone on to inspire many other booty tracks with this record.
Virgo - Free Yourself
Oct 15, 2003
This is one of the greatest moments in dance music, period. Marshall Jefferson and Adonis showed everyone how it is done waaay back in 1986, with the barest of equipment making classic deep house, back in the day when this kind of music was all called simply house music. All four tracks (ranging in mood from sleazy to relaxed) are unique, however it is "Free Yourself" which sets this record apart. This track is a deep, dreamy, atmospheric masterpiece that will amaze even the casual music fan, the minute the needle hits the groove - an absolute classic!!!
Timedwellers - What Time? E.P.
Oct 15, 2003
Aaaah.... this record is the bomb! This is one of those hidden gems, that come off small labels that make you wonder how many more of them your missing. To sum it up, the EP is four very cleverly arranged tracks of jackin tech-house that are not just party jams, but music you're happy to hear at home. Track A1 is THE essential track with one of the funkiest basslines ever, great cut up vocal samples, and really amazing turntable-style editing that makes your jaw drop when you hear it all come together - Amazing, worth 10x its price for this alone! Track B1 i've heard pop up in a Derrick May set, which is not surprising as the whole record is characteristic of his style of performing and programming. I can't stress how amazing this record is!
