Profile: I went to Goa just before turn of the century, blew my mind, and came back seeing things slightly differently. Been going there every year for the past 10 odd years and have witnessed first hand the decline of the founding spirit of Goatrance music, and simultaneously, the increase of commercialization, crime, corruption and an overall lower level of morality and consciousness by the visitors, locals and authorities alike. Having said that, I continue to go there, for there is something in the Goan soil that is still pure and will not change. You can feel the magic when you're in Goa, just not at the parties... :-(

As someone once said, "there is something in the earth" in Goa. This is what draws me back there year after year.

MUSIC I ESPECIALLY LIKE :

Goatrance (1992-1998)
Some psychedelic trance after that
Reggae
Dub
Ambient / Downtempo

Various - Forever Psychedelic - 16-Oct-09 02:25 AM
Matsuri Products has attained quite a bit of fame and acclaim amongst classic Goatrance lovers. I can safely say, this CD has some contribution to that status.

Digitalist (aka Shakta) starts us out with some proper oldschool intricate psychedelia followed by XIS. Now, I wasnt too familiar with XIS before this CD, but this track just grabbed me by the gonads and swung my mind about a bit ! Top stuff ! The Spacecat track doesnt really follow XIS too well, but its a decent track nonetheless. I always like Tsuyoshis work and Kollage here is no exception. The Freeman track really wasnt my cup of tea, neither was the track by Scare (which is drumnbass ? im not really much for genres so dont crucify me here). Very A grade stuff by Quirk too with Dark Matter - superb track!

All in all, an easy 4.5 of 5 stars!

Exceptional tracks: 1, 2, 6!!

Goa Gil - Forest Of The Saints - 04-Sep-09 02:40 AM
Well, well, well ! No reviews for a truly EPIC album. This came out about the time I had just visited my first few parties outside Bombay and in Goa. I was about 15, and this CD was like instantaneous TNT for my brain ;) Besides the nostalgic, sentimental value it carries for me, Ill try and write an objective review.

Overall, a rather good, fresh selection of tracks. Avatar and Slide open the album with some proper crunchers for the (acid)dancefloor. Psycho by IM might sound a bit cheesy today and IM bashers will love to state how IM is incapable of producing anything good, but I guess this is where wed have to agree to disagree. I quite liked IMs first 2 albums, and this track was cutting-f*cking-edge at the time. It instantly blew me away. Alot of kids I knew bought the album simply for this track. Moving on, the rest of the tracks are quite enjoyable, with some big names such as ManMadeMan and Electric Universe.

The Section X track stands out for me. Objectively, Id give this album a 4/5 stars as it was extremely fresh and new sounding at the time of its release, however, due to the memories it invokes (Disco Valley with Gil on the decks blasting), my rating for it is in fact a 5/5 !

Process (2) - One Drop Or Two? - 29-Aug-09 05:26 AM
As one of the previous reviewers pointed out - "To what otherwise could have been an even more anticipated release, if about half of the tracks on One Drop or Two werent released, this is still a sweet CD."

Oktober Revolution throws you straight in to the deep end. Classic Process stuff with a dark (sometimes scary bassline) and very delicate/intricate melodies that seem to appear out of nowhere.

Extremely innovative album, unlike much of the music that was released around this time. My favourite tracks are Oktober Revolution and Maharishi.

Rating 4.5 / 5

Shiva Chandra - Spicy Moments - 29-Aug-09 05:16 AM
Surprising not to see any reviews for this solid album. This was Daniels first album but as is the case with most goatrance, "old is gold" ;)

Some classic goa tunes are to be found here like Train Ticket. Deep basslines sprinkled with intricate melodies and complex intertwining structures take you on quite a wild but beautiful ride.

General consensus seems to be that Auricular is their best album, but Id put this right up there with it.

A solid 4/5 stars and a very safe buy.

One of the better 3D Vision compilations, this stomper contains some of the best music produced by Nomad and Talamasca. Mutation and Come On are two legendary Talamasca tracks and this compilation has them both, along with some of their other better work.

Too bad it all went downhill from about here - for Talamasca, Nomad and 3D Vision.. :(

All in all, Id give this compilation a 3.5/5 stars. Not the greatest trance album ever produced, but definately some of Talamasca and Nomads best tracks!
