Los Lobos - The Town And The City - 05-Oct-07 11:14 AM
This is the first Los Lobos record I heard in my life (not counting 'La Bamba' which I didn't even know was covered by them until recently). Well... I was blown away by this band. This is the type of rock 'n roll I find to be sorely missing from the music scene since the 70s. Listen to this if you're sick of all those crappy garage rock bands of today, and are craving for honest lyrics and great songwriting. Right now I'm in the process of desperately assimilating their entire back catalogue, for the obvious reasons.
Pick of the bunch: 'Little Things'. Gets me every time; a very emotional piece of music. Oh, 'The Valley' and 'Three Dogs And A Bone' deserve a special mention as well.
ps. Please try and actually _buy_ their records. They don't even make money with their music, which is quite sad, also considering they've been at it since the 80s (and frankly this says a whole lot about the state of the music industry right now).
As One - Celestial Soul - 01-Dec-06 11:59 AM
I'd like to reinforce that this album really is an improvement over his first album, which sounds more generic when compared to this. It's also his first outing on which all of the well-known (and loved) As One styles come bubbling to the surface; that is straight up detroit techno, ambient flourishes, jazzy tunes, experimental breakbeat tracks and a warm, loving production. I'd say get this immediately, even though it's pretty hard to come by these days.
Calibre - Interphaze / Fire & Water - 27-Nov-06 06:05 AM
'Fire & Water' is hands down one of the greatest tunes this man has written. Pure minimal funky badness. Everybody always talks about the bassline, which is simply one of the best I've ever heard. It rips the music apart and puts it together at the same time; utterly irresistible for the mind as well as the body. But let's not forget the slamming breaks which are an essential part of this piece of music. The whole thing just makes you happy and f***s you up at the same time (if that makes any sense). Calibre is definitely one of the true talents in the scene. He can do no wrong. Thank f*** for outstanding labels like Soul:R for bringing the goods each and every time.
Kenny Larkin - Metaphor - 18-Nov-06 02:41 AM
Enormous grooves. Tidal waves of technosoul, electrojazz, or whatever you like to call it. I wish I was into this stuff a lot earlier; I can only imagine what tracks like 'Catatonic (State One)' and 'Loop 2' sound like in clubs. If I ever get slapped in the face by this music I just know it will leave me spasmodic, replete with physical energy but energized by the music and dancing, dancing, dancing. Inspirational.
Flashbulb, The - Red Extensions Of Me - 26-Jun-06 01:56 AM
Such a freakin' good record... Let me try and summarize it: wonderful, lyrical melodies throughout backed with amazing drill 'n bass, a touch of metal here and there, some proper drum 'n bass, "phat" downtempo, blissful piano and acoustic guitar workouts, a few quirky lyrics and the soul of jazz in pure electronic form. It all comes together in the mind of The Flashbulb.
