Daft Punk - Homework - 20-Apr-08 08:03 AM
Back in 96, you couldnt go to a French rave without hearing "Rollin & Scratchin" at least once in the evening. If there ever was one proper "rave classic" in France then, this is the one. So when people later found out that Daft Punk had signed to Virgin for the release of "Homework", they were accused of selling out and foreign DJs playing "Rollin & Scratchin" to make us happy started to get booed quite regularly. Everyone was sick of hearing that same old Daft Punk track at every party, but little did we know how much more we were going to hear from them ! Just when we had our fill and were expecting a more insane track from them, we got quite the opposite: "Revolution 909", "Around The World", "Burnin" and their remix of I:Cubes "Disco Cubizm" - 4 tracks that made them highly popular in the then-suddenly revived club scene and highly unpopular in the then-suddenly declining rave scene. I do believe theres a before and after "Homework", but most youngsters biggest mistake is to believe that there was nothing worthy of interest before Daft Punk, and I happen to believe that its just when techno culture was at its prime !
Universal Indicator - Universal Indicator Red - 03-May-05 11:24 PM
I met RDJ in late 2000 and asked him what Universal Indicator tracks were his. He answered: "half the tracks on the red one". I was surprised he didnt mention more. I asked: "nothing on the green one ?" since it is the most Aphexy-sounding to me. And he replied: "no... the red one". Maybe he was just messing with me, but 6 months ahead, he told me about the creation of his new MEN label (which came true) and confirmed the existence of the Q-Chastic double-12" with no plans to re-release it. This is what he said to me. What you believe is now up to you ! :)
Dub Tractor - Scary H H Loop / 104 Dub - 03-Feb-05 01:17 AM
Mostly Arovane / Ulrich Schnauss-like electronica. Nice and soft. The Luke Vibert "Wagon Christ" remix is very jungly with many breaks and edits - rather reminiscing of his releases by the name of Plug. Pretty good stuff. All in all quite a worthwhile release.
K21 - 19-Nov-04 04:20 AM
K21 is a much overlooked artist from the south of France specializing in eerie hard techno, breakcore and hardcore with an ever-present groove. His sound design alone makes his releases definitely worth at the very least a listen. Think of a blend between Alec Empire and Christian Vogel with occasional industrial elements added in and a definite personal touch. This should describe the kind of quality you can expect from his releases. I have personally never been disappointed.
