Squarepusher - Hello Everything Nov 21, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
This is Squareepushers best album to date. What makes this a favourite of mine is the melodies and comparative so pace of most of the album, it simply makes it much more accessible. Yes his other stuff has melodies, but this is just, well, more! Favorite tracks are the opener Hello Meow, a stomping track, The Modern Bass Guitar, which is a classic Northern Warp beautie. Keep up the good work Tom.
Tycho (3) - Past Is Prologue Nov 20, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
This is a great chilled out soundscape album. Yes, it does sound like Boards of Canada but I personally think its a little harsh to dismiss a listen based on this. There are only so many genres of music in this world and everything else comes from that and if it is good then it will stand the test of time and be remembered. For me, this is one such Album. If you want to be a music snob then go and drag out your old BOC albums and listen to them for the umpteenth time, but if like me you are always looking for something new, regardless of weather or not it sounds like something else, then this is definitely worth a listen at the very least. Tracks 1 is a melodic plodding tune which is awesome while the next couple have some wonderful soundscapes with the beat coming in halfway through. In fact a lot of the tracks are like that, with the melody building until the beat comes in around the middle. Wonderful collection.
New City 16 - Pre Nov 11, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
I stumbled accross this on a download site and found it was a complete Jem of a album. It is not the most cutting edge album you will have ever heard but there is some sublime melodies and awesome noises in there. Pretty much every track starts inocently and builds very quickly into a real bouncy toe tapping funkarama. I noticed that there loads of other un rated albums on this label that I can not wait to track down. Favourite tracks are the Voc Tin Hub which is disco electro treat with a superb Detroit baseline (heavenly) and Sudiflask is another beauty. Check this out it's a real IDM treat.
Plaid & Bob Jaroc - Greedy Baby Jun 19, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
I can only comment on the music part of this release (the cd) and whilst it is very Plaid it simply does not truly match the depth of thier original releases.
If you are prepared to look for it, there are people who have copied Plaid and Black Dog Productions who are making a better job of consistently giving us the IDM we want.
Greedy Baby...? We have been waiting a long time now for the old days of Plaid to return and perhaps, dare I say it, they are not coming back. Sorry but I am not being greedy, just expectant, and expectations are never realised these past years by the men who invented IDM.
William Orbit - Hello Waveforms Jun 17, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
Mr Orbit has been around for a very long time indeed. You only have to look at his catalogue which goes back to 1986 to know he has contributed alot! Anyway, I have always been interested in what Mr O has had to offer and to be fair it has never really been my cup of tea. It just never really hit the mark in the past, but I have to say this album deserves much more than its current score. I'm not sure quite how people have rated this, as if they had heard any other stuff by Mr O, then this relly is right up there. There are a few tunes that are not fantastic but overall i think there is enough original or if not original tuneful to keep most downtempo fans happy.
If this is has passed to by to date i think it is worth a listen, 'They live in the sky' is one of my favourites. Don't be put off by the negative ratings to date.
Plaid - Rest Proof Clockwork Jun 13, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
This is by far the best of Plaid's releases to date. The album as a whole covers so many different genres of electronic music and hits them so perfectly that it is hard to know where it all went wrong with future releases. Anyway, if you have not already heard this album, then where have you been? Go get yourself a copy!
